Mosac was formed when four mothers whose children were abused came together and drew strength from each other’s shared experience and realised the need for a similar service for others. All non-abusing parents, carers and families have the right to receive comprehensive support to live with the consequences of s*xual abuse and to aid recovery. We aim to provide a unique and specialist service, off

ering practical and emotional support to non-abusing parents, carers and families. We enable these families to achieve and sustain an improved quality of life by rebuilding confidence, alleviating isolation, promoting inclusion and empowering them with the skills to safeguard themselves and their children. We break the silence surrounding child s*xual abuse by raising awareness through training and consultancy. We offer practical and emotional support through our telephone helpline, advice sessions, advocacy service, therapeutic services, workshops and training, support groups, an information service, and an email information service. Mosac would like to invite you and your colleagues to Mosac’s Spring training programmes.

For the last 30 years Mosac has been supporting families who have been impacted by Child S*xual Abuse. Our training programmes are deeply rooted in the cases of our clients and their experiences of working with professionals following their children’s disclosure of Child S*xual Abuse.

Our programmes support professionals working with children and families to better understand Child S*xual Abuse, understand the impact of Child S*xual Abuse on both the victim and their families and to support professionals to feel more confident and equipped to work with families following disclosure.

Today was the launch of the final report of the Independent Inquiry into Child S*xual Abuse. We welcome the findings, reflections and recommendations of this landmark inquiry.

https://www.iicsa.org.uk/reports-recommendations/publications/inquiry/final-report

Mosac welcomes the acknowledgement of the scale and seriousness of child s*xual abuse (CSA), and the inquiry’s commitment to lift the lid on the hidden pain of many families in the UK.

We particularly commend the involvement of adult survivors in shaping the content and recommendations of the report, and the focus on providing specialist therapeutic support for child vicitms of s*xual abuse We welcome this landmark report and its strong set of recommendations.

The report highlights the terrible experiences of children who have been abused by people working in institutions with a duty to protect them with many institutions failing to respond appropriately, if at all, to allegations.

Mosac agrees that “campaigns should challenge myths and stereotypes about child s*xual abuse” (Recommendation 4). The biggest myth is that most child s*xual abuse occurs outside the home. During the period 2021/2022, over 70% of our service users reported intrafamilial abuse (CSA in the home) and this has been a consistent trend since our charity was formed 30 years ago. This is supported by the 2018 report on the Centre for Expertise on Child S*x Abuse, which found that two thirds of CSA is intrafamilal.

Stringent disclosure mechanisms are always welcome, especially for those working with children. Alongside this, we suggest that, with the high proportion of cases not investigated by the police and the lack of convictions for CSA there should be more focus placed on ensuring more children, and their protective carers, are believed and more cases are quickly and successfully brought to trial.

We welcome the recommendation of creating a single core data set (Recommendation 1), and hope that this data set captures ALL reports of s*xual abuse, not just those cases that are taken forward by the the social care and criminal justice systems, which remain unacceptably low. We would recommend that the family court and the school network (whether private or state) are included in the data set.

Building on the incredible and in-depth work that has been done by the IICSA, Mosac would recommend a follow up inquiry of a similar scale into intrafamilal child s*xual abuse. This type of abuse often has its own unique set of challenges for reporting, protection, healing and future outcomes for the child.

We feel that having a Cabinet Minister for Children in both England and Wales will help raise awareness of the broader context of Child S*xual Abuse and will champion the voices of child vicitms and their families.

This report, we hope, will be a turning point in how child s*x abuse is understood and how children are protected.
