A man was seriously injured in a horrific knife attack in Belfast this week. The violence he experienced was shocking and inexcusable.
Since then, homes have been set alight, families have been forced to flee, and people have been targeted because of their race or where they come from.
Let's be clear: this is not justice. No one should be blamed for the actions of another person because they share a nationality, race, religion or immigration status.
But this didn't come from nowhere. For years, refugees and migrants have been used as political scapegoats. Communities have been told to fear people seeking safety. Hostile rhetoric and policies have inflamed debate, sown division, and when entire groups of people are repeatedly portrayed as a threat, it becomes easier to blame a whole community for the actions of one individual.
That is how division takes hold. That is how innocent people become targets. And, quite literally this week, that is how communities are set on fire.
Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home and community. There is no place for racism or anti-refugee hate.
