Courage isn't always loud.

Sometimes it's waiting. Sometimes it's hoping. Sometimes it's finding the strength to keep going when the future feels uncertain.

This Refugee Week, we're sharing a poem by Ilsa, one of our graduate Young Leaders.

After spending years navigating the asylum system, Ilsa now campaigns for safe routes and encourages other young people with lived experience to use their voices.

Three years ago today, one of the deadliest tragedies in the Mediterranean unfolded off the coast of Greece.

More than 600 people lost their lives in the Pylos shipwreck while trying to reach safety in Europe.

They were people with families, hopes and futures. People who should still be here today.

Three years on, survivors and families are still seeking truth, accountability and justice. Last year, charges were brought against 17 members of the Greek Coast Guard – a significant step after years of delays and denials.

Today, we remember those who lost their lives. We stand with the survivors and families still seeking answers.

And we remember why tragedies like Pylos continue to happen. When safe routes are unavailable, people are left with impossible choices. No one should have to risk their life to find safety.

SAFE ROUTES, SAVE LIVES.

Over the past week, refugees and migrants across Northern Ireland have watched homes burn, families flee, and communities live in fear. People who came here seeking safety are once again being made to feel unsafe.

To anyone wondering whether they still belong here, our message is simple. You do. The people setting fires, targeting families, and spreading hate do not speak for us. Our communities are stronger than hate. We choose solidarity over fear.

But solidarity isn't silent. When refugees and migrants are being scapegoated, we all have a responsibility to challenge misinformation and stand alongside those being targeted. That's why we've put together a conversation guide to help you challenge anti-refugee myths and have better conversations.

Because hate grows when it goes unchallenged. Get your guide: https://act.safepassage.org.uk/get-your-easy-guide-navigating-tough-conversations-migration

A man was seriously injured in a horrific knife attack in Belfast this week. The violence he experienced was shocking and inexcusable.

Since then, homes have been set alight, families have been forced to flee, and people have been targeted because of their race or where they come from.

Let's be clear: this is not justice. No one should be blamed for the actions of another person because they share a nationality, race, religion or immigration status.

But this didn't come from nowhere. For years, refugees and migrants have been used as political scapegoats. Communities have been told to fear people seeking safety. Hostile rhetoric and policies have inflamed debate, sown division, and when entire groups of people are repeatedly portrayed as a threat, it becomes easier to blame a whole community for the actions of one individual.

That is how division takes hold. That is how innocent people become targets. And, quite literally this week, that is how communities are set on fire.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home and community. There is no place for racism or anti-refugee hate.

Family reunion has helped thousands of refugees rebuild their lives alongside the people they love. So what happens when one of the UK's most established safe routes is taken away?

We sat down with Tim Farron MP to discuss the suspension of refugee family reunion, the role of safe routes, and why keeping families together should remain at the heart of refugee policy.

This is Voices from Parliament — our series bringing you conversations with MPs across the political spectrum about what these reforms mean for people seeking safety.

Imagine being a child alone, separated from your family, with no safe way to reach them.

Numbers of unaccompanied children detained in UK-run facilities in northern France are rising, despite repeated concerns about conditions and safeguarding standards in these sites.

No child should have to risk dangerous journeys to be with family. Expanding safe routes like Refugee Family Reunion would help children reach their loved ones safely, legally and with dignity.

Children need safe routes, NOT detention.

No one would risk their lives on dangerous journeys in flimsy boats unless they had no other choice.

Each of these numbers represents a person - someone with a voice and a story.

Without safe alternatives people fleeing war and persecution have no choice but to make dangerous journeys at the hands of smugglers. We cannot stand by while people risk their lives in search of safety.

The Government could stop more Channel crossings by opening safe routes. But instead, they're ramping up harsh measures and tightening borders.

No child should have to risk their life to find safety.

But new Home Office figures show that nearly 4,900 children crossed the Channel in the year ending March 2026 - and the real number is likely even higher, as some children are wrongly treated as adults when they arrive.

At the same time, with safe routes like Refugee Family Reunion suspended, families are being torn apart and children left with no safe way to reach their loved ones.

When safe routes disappear, dangerous journeys increase.

The Government must change course by reinstating Refugee Family Reunion and opening safe routes for people seeking safety.

Safe routes save lives.

NEW: A baby only a few weeks old has died while her family was trying to reach safety in Italy. Her mother and two-year-old sister survived. Our hearts are with them as they face an unimaginable loss 💔

The baby died from hypothermia shortly after arriving in Lampedusa. Her death is a heartbreaking reminder of the cost of a system that fails to put human lives first. No family should be left without a way to reach safety. Yet too often, people fleeing war and persecution are forced to make impossible choices because safe routes do not exist.

These deaths are not inevitable. They are the result of political choices. Safe routes NOW.
