The Long Run

The Long Run We are a membership organisation supporting global tourism businesses to accelerate positive impact via 4Cs. Learn more here: https://www.thelongrun.org/

We believe that we can achieve together for the planet, for people, and for business is much more than what we can do on our own. Collectively we can show the world that business can be a force for good and inspire others to take up best practice to make the world a better place. The members of The Long Run continuously demonstrate that profit can and should go hand in hand with productive ecosystems, and prosperous communities.

makes small pleasures a big deal. In the process, they remind you of the things that really matter: your connection to nature and people.

This week, the Grootbos team hosted our Southern & Western Africa regional hub meeting. Everyone left feeling awe-struck, deeply grateful and inspired for the second half of the year🫜🐌

Where do you start when your property or travel business is new to sustainability?

We asked our community for the small changes that actually moved the needle. The answers were refreshingly practical, including one lodge that doubled its gross profit by swapping imported tinned supplies for locally sourced produce.

The way our newsletter works is we ask our community one question per month and pick the top 4 answers. The questions come from you, our subscribers, because we only want our community answering truly relevant, pressing questions.

To subscribe to the newsletter, you need to submit a question. Don’t overthink it, go with your gut😉 link in our bio.

1,748 turtles would not have successfully made their way into Laamu’s ocean in 2025 without their conservation intervention 🥚—>🐢

This is a great example of a tourism working with local NGO’s to protect nature. At the same time, they embed education in the guest experience and share the importance of marine conservation with their local community.

It’s also a masterclass in impact storytelling. Head to the link in bio to read and impact report.

Britain is one of the world’s most nature-depleted nations, and the people changing that are closer than you think.

A new generation is choosing to work with the land rather than against it, and where they lead, nature follows fast.

At The Long Run, we’ve seen this firsthand, from the savannahs of Kenya to the wetlands of Patagonia, the businesses doing the most for nature are the ones that have learned to work alongside it. This event is about bringing those stories into the city, and into the conversation.

Join us in London for an afternoon that brings nature, and those who champion it, back into the heart of the city.

In Kenyan culture, nobody takes themselves too seriously. This feeling shone through at our 3-day regional hub meeting hosted by our member, last week. Our East African community came home feeling “deeply connected and inspired” (their words, not ours!).

We approached the event as follows:

- We don’t cover big sustainability topics. There’s a sharp focus on what we’re seeing in East Africa specifically
- The agenda is co-created on site with the Sirikoi team to play to their strengths
- Breakout groups, not panel discussions. When someone gets up and presents a long panel, you tend to lose people within 10 seconds.
- A back-of-house tour at Sirikoi (organic vegetable garden, impact centre, glass cutting and crusher, staff quarters, staff canteen and all) lets people see and feel their impact. When you see our 4Cs framework in action, it truly sticks with you.

Thank you to all the members who showed up so willing to learn and share their challenges openly. And a big thank you to Sirikoi for hosting and showing us how impact can be communicated at every level.

“All people could hear was the buzzing sound of chainsaws. The land was barren and degraded. Now, 3 decades later, you can hear the humming of birds and the buzzing of bees. We’ve discovered many new species of plants and animals including our very own micro-snail.” - Billie Dumaliang, TIME’s 2024 Next Generation Leader and Co-founder of one of our members, .

Enduata is built on a solid partnership between Tanzanian guide Michael Shayo and British hospitality entrepreneur Matt Wilkey. The pair met when Michael guided Matt’s family on safari. What started as an exchange of texts over WhatsApp evolved into an ambitious business plan to build lodges that would give back to both people and wildlife.

“In the early days of Aracari, we sought out people and places that weren’t yet part of the tourism landscape: communities tucked into the Andes, artisans working without markets, local guides with deep knowledge but no platform. These weren’t polished experiences built for visitors. They were real lives. We went back to these rural communities, year after year. People saw we were serious. That’s what builds credibility.

What gives me the most satisfaction is seeing how some of our partners’ children go to university, speak perfect English, and have futures their parents couldn’t imagine. That’s what tourism can do when it’s done right.” - Marisol Mosquera, Founder of
