EFA London (English for Action)

EFA London (English for Action) Action-orientated English courses and community organising to build migrant-led movements for change. What is EFA London (English for Action)?

We work in partnership with local organisations to set up ESOL and literacy courses in venues which are accessible and at the heart of the communities in which we work, such as workplaces, faith institutions, schools and community centres. Continuity is important to the work we do and we are committed to the areas where we work. Our classroom is a place where people are valued, listened to, suppor

ted and have an active involvement in the content of their classes. Our pedagogy is inspired by Paulo Freire and the work of Action Aid's Reflect ESOL Project. We see education as a tool for social change: learners are encouraged to share their experiences with the group, and critical thinking and dialogue are valued. Our courses cover more than just English language: they offer training and advice relating to everyday difficulties faced by our learners. By building group trust, confidence and ownership of the course, participants learn to use our classes as a space where they can discuss and tackle problems affecting their lives and their communities. We believe that improved language skills enable migrants to put more into, and get more out of, life in London. EFA London exists to equip people to effect positive change in their homes, communities and workplaces. History

EFA London was launched in 2006. The first lesson took place at the London School of Economics on September 28th to students from the London Citizens Workers Association. The project was inspired by a similar scheme piloted by Camille Makunganya and London CITIZENS in 2005, who successfully taught English in Deptford to members of Our Lady’s Church.

Success! We've secured commitments to improve access to English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in Lambeth, Hackney, Southwark and Greenwich!

We're looking forward to working with the councils to co-design and implement ESOL advice services and call on central government for more ESOL funding.

This achievement is a testament to the incredible skill, passion and commitment of EFA's participants and forum theatre practitioners. Together, they worked very hard to convert the challenges they've experienced when trying to access ESOL into moving theatre plays which clearly communicated that between the restrictive eligibility criteria, lack of funding and lack of information, trying to access an ESOL class is like trying to walk through a maze full of dead ends and no clear path in sight.

It's been amazing to see our students develop their performances, which left audiences emotional and feeling the pain of the migrant experience as they were so persuasive. Go team!

Nadia, one of our Southwark students who participated in the national housing march last month, wrote a reply after reading the article: “I’ve read Lauren’s experience in detail, and mine is the same. I work long hours at three jobs to pay. £800 a month in rent, and the house is in terrible condition, the bathroom and kitchen are covered in mould, and the landlord has no intention of fixing it. Mould is harmful to our health. I hope that with the marches, chants, and messages, the government will pass a new law regulating rents in London, which are the most expensive in the world.”

“UNITY IS THE BEST MECHANISM FOR A CAMPAIGN WITH POSITIVE EFFECTS.”

Lauren Elcock is among the young Londoners who say rising rents are forcing them to quit the capital.

Today we welcomed Team London Bridge to our weekly Learning & Action group at Walworth Living Room Pembroke House. We spent the morning discussing health equity alongside Homza from South London Citizens UK. 17 learners, 3 partners, 2 volunteers, 1 teacher-organiser and dozens of solutions for better health in 🥳🙌🤩

EFA's teacher-organisers are uniquely skilled at making complex content accessible to English language learners without losing any context. This is vital for ensuring our community isn't left out of important conversations and decisions.

Our participatory approach to (English for Speakers of Other Languages) means that participants learn the language that's useful to their lives right now while building important connections and support networks. This model builds skills, grows confidence, and maximises engagement and retention.

If you would like to know more about our Learning & Action groups for migrant communities with limited English language proficiency or if you'd like some information about our training offer for practitioners, send us a DM or email [email protected]

Access to participatory ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is a recipe for inclusion!

Will you join our campaign to ensure that everyone who needs it can access English lessons? Drop us a message if we can count on you via our DMs or at [email protected]

Are you a teacher? Talk to your students about this! Why not use a bit of class time and encourage students to write to their MPs?

They can share how hard it is for many people to afford classes, how valuable ESOL is, and ask MPs to encourage Keir Starmer to follow up on his speech with funded plans to provide ESOL classes for everyone who needs them: https://www.writetothem.com/?a=westminstermp
