Professional standards are what keep occupational therapy grounded. They guide how OTs make decisions, navigate complex situations and show up consistently for the people they work with, whether that's in social care, mental health, housing, schools or anywhere else OTs practise.

There is still time to nominate a worthy OT for the 2027 Elizabeth Casson Memorial Lecture.

Dr Elizabeth Casson brought occupational therapy to England and built the foundations our profession still stands on today. The lecture in her name is one of the highest honours in occupational therapy, celebrating an OT who carries that same pioneering spirit forward and is shaping what the profession looks like for the next generation.

Decisions about the future of health and care services in England are being made now. Occupational therapy needs to have a strong voice in the conversation.

The new national AHP framework will impact how services are designed and delivered and your experience can help ensure occupational therapy is recognised from the outset.

We've had great responses from OTs working in acute and community settings and we're keen to hear from more of you working in local authority, mental health and criminal justice. The more occupational therapists who respond, the stronger our collective influence will be.

A big welcome to Rosie Hughes, who's joining BAOT Council as our new Research and Development representative. 👋

Rosie has worked in community mental health, run clinical and academic trials, completed her PhD in Health Services Research and worked in system change, quality improvement and transformation roles as a research programme manager.

That's a lot of experience she's bringing to a role that really matters for the future of occupational therapy. Welcome Rosie!

For 40 years, HRH The Princess Royal has stood behind occupational therapy and the people who practise it, as our Patron since 1986.

In that time, she has undertaken 175 visits across all four nations and the breadth of occupational therapy practice and settings. HRH has launched new services, addressed conferences and celebrated innovation and excellence within the profession.

We're grateful for her support and wish her a wonderful birthday today. 🎂

Participation Changes Everything.

That's the theme for OT Week 2026, launching on 2 November.

Participation is about doing the things that matter to you. For some people, that means connecting with friends, caring for family, learning new skills, volunteering, getting out into their community or doing a favourite hobby.

Those everyday activities create confidence, routine and opportunity and can help people achieve their goals.

For Melanie, participation meant being able to go out and buy her own electric shaver again, allowing her to maintain an aspect of personal care that was important to her. 🪒

As systems focus more on prevention, participation and person-centred support, occupational therapy plays a vital role in helping people live well and achieve the outcomes that matter to them. 🙌

OT Week 2026 is an opportunity to showcase that impact, raise the profile of the profession and build momentum towards a major new campaign launching in the new year.
