“I think the two barriers which were most important or were most pertinent in accessing higher education in my career are the fact that neither of my parents went to university and living in a rural area, so I suppose the whole thing about student finance, about applying, personal statements, interviews... all of that is kind of a bit of a foreign concept.

I also live in the middle of nowhere. I’m from a very rural area. We send about one person to Oxford every 20 odd years, so I’m coming from somewhere where academic success isn’t really common. I think that’s also a barrier because obviously most of the opportunities are centred around cities and I don’t live in one of those, so I think that’s also a barrier.”

Gabriella has led a campaign for financial education in schools, working with a range of financial education charities and the Bank of England. She is the first in her family to go to university and now she’s studying PPE at the University of Oxford.
