Drawing on Stuart Hall’s cultural studies and pedagogical legacy, the project explores sound as a form of learning, cultural exchange, and diasporic experience. Through painting, photography, moving image, text, and sound, Hart considers how knowledge travels through everyday practices, informal gatherings, and sonic experiences.

The project forms the beginning of a new collaboration between cultural neighbours: a joint artist programme between iniva and Chelsea College of Arts, UAL.

Can't make it to the Stuart Hall Library on a weekday? We're opening on Saturdays 📚

For the run of Andrew Pierre Hart's 'If you like rice, you'll understand – Collective Noise', the Stuart Hall Library will open on the first Saturday of each month, starting with the show's opening weekend. You can see the full exhibition across iniva, and our neighbours Chelsea Space and spend time in the library that helped shape the project.

Introducing Davina Dhallu, our new Library Manager at the Stuart Hall Library! 📚

Davina leads the development of our library collection, overseeing what we acquire so it continues to reflect iniva's ethos: centring the artistic, curatorial and theoretical practices of artists, curators and writers from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America, and across the Global Majority. She also manages our wonderful team of volunteers and our soon-to-be Assistant Librarian!

Her research focuses on contemporary non-Eurocentric histories and the importance of knowledge production in documenting these narratives, with a personal interest in music history 🎶

Davina's staff book recommendation is 'Decolonising the Mind: The Politics of Language in African Literature' by the late Kenyan author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o.

In her words: "It's the kind of read that completely changes the way you think. Just when I thought I was radical, this book proved me wrong. Its premise – that language isn't neutral, but an active repository of culture encoded with worldviews, symbolism, allegory and power dynamics – showed me that the words we speak hold the potential for oppression, but also for empowerment.

"Understanding the psychological imprint left by learning the 'colonial tongue' inspired me to take learning Punjabi, the language of my people, seriously. Punjabis tend to talk with their hands, showing a real passion and emotion that doesn't always carry over into English. There are also certain words, concepts and proverbs that just can't be translated into English, and I think there's a sacred beauty and power in that."

New in the Stuart Hall Library!

Polaris Magazine Issue 03 - a Transational Travel Magazine Born in Japan was generously donated to our collection by its founder, Takuro Nuruki, who visited us last month.

Taki-san is an editor, researcher and strategist working across publishing, academia and independent practice, and leads Studio Polaris between Tokyo and London. His work asks how publishing and storytelling can connect research with practice, foster a sense of belonging and act as methodologies for social change. Studio Polaris explores the Living Wisdom held in local cultures and everyday life.

He is a PhD researcher at Central Saint Martins, UAL, and a Research Fellow at the Research Center for Social Creativity, Musashino Art University.

Before we closed for summer, we filled the Chelsea College of Arts courtyard with movement & authentic sound system vibes 💃

Our all-levels Dancehall workshop closed out Linett Kamala's solo exhibition at the Stuart Hall Library, Dancehall Riddim Queens. It brought together complete beginners and people who live for the riddim. Led by Shelaine Prince with music by DJ Bad Anju, the session took us through the foundations of Dancehall culture and movement, starting with a gentle warm-up before building into classic grooves and guided choreography, with plenty of room left to freestyle and find your own flow.

It was a space filled with confidence, joy and self-expression. Thank you to everyone who came and danced with us, and thank you again to Linett Kamala for sharing your beautiful artworks and the power of Dancehall with us.

We're back from the break and looking ahead to October, when we open a new exhibition with Andrew Pierre Hart: If you like rice, you'll understand – Collective Noise.

Dancehall Riddim Queens, a solo exhibition by Linett Kamala, is supported by The Ampersand Foundation.

The exhibition is curated by Beatriz Lobo with programme assistance by Vasita (Pleng) Jirathiyut.
