WFME at ICAM 2026
The plenaries at ICAM on the increase in misinformation in health and the need for more compassion in medicine intersected in the requirement of trust between patients and healthcare providers. This trust can only develop over time as a human to human relationship evolves. Prerequisites include having healthcare providers who can focus on their own wellness, as well as having enough healthcare providers who can take the requisite time with their patients. In other words, this boils down to a health work force issue. We need more healthcare providers to get to our desired end point.

Wrapping up an incredible few days at the AMSA 2026 Medical Education Conference in Lagos, Nigeria! 🇳🇬

WFME was honoured to actively engage in enriching discussions with a global community of experts, policymakers, educators and future doctors, all focused on shaping the future of medical education.

We were also encouraged to hear Jim Campbell, former Director of the WHO Health Workforce Department, highlight the key role WFME plays in strengthening knowledge and intelligence around the global health workforce. 🎓

We appreciated a thoughtful session on Arts in Medicine, facilitated by Dr Kunle Adewale, Executive Director of the Global Arts in Medicine Fellowship, which highlighted how creative and therapeutic activities contribute to public health and support patient well-being, recovery, and dignity.

This type of engagement reminds us of the impact of collective action: because investing in medical education today means a healthier world for all of us tomorrow. 🌍

WFME is thrilled to share that we have officially been welcomed at the AMSA Medical Education Conference 2026 held on 26-29 March 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria — and we are proud to be part of it! 🇳🇬

AMSA 2026 was officially opened by His Excellency Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, who presented the bold Lagos State Development Plan 2052 — a vision to increase medical student intake from 150 to 1,000 per year by engaging over 300 general hospitals as training sites, addressing the region's critical deficit of 23,000 physicians.

It is a privilege to be a supporter of this conference and to stand alongside medical schools, educators, and students from across Africa and beyond, united by a shared mission to strengthen health systems through quality education. This year's theme "Increasing Capacity and Retention of the Global Health Workforce" couldn't be more timely. 🎓✨
