๐ŸŽ™๏ธ In the latest of our podcast, Richard Pater speaks with veteran diplomatic correspondent and senior contributing editor at The Jerusalem Post Herb Keinon about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuโ€™s approach to Britain, Hamas and Israelโ€™s regional manoeuvring.

Keinon examines the Likud primary results and how Netanyahu is positioning the party ahead of Israelโ€™s general election. He also assesses Western engagement with Hamas, US policy towards Iran, Turkeyโ€™s ambitions in Syria, and the implications of the emerging Saudiโ€“Pakistani alliance for Israel.

Yekutiel Yehuda Katz was laid to rest today at the Mount of Olives Cemetery in Jerusalem, 44 years after he was declared missing in action in Lebanon.

Katz was killed in the Battle of Sultan Yacoub during the First Lebanon War in 1982, and his remains were recovered and returned to Israel this week in a special mission carried by the IDF.

๐Ÿ”ต Israelโ€™s governing Likud party held its internal party primary ahead of the general election.

Party members voted for the most part for Netanyahu loyalists to front the partyโ€™s electoral list. Garnering the most votes were Eli Cohen, who has served in several prominent cabinet positions, Amir Ohana, the combative Knesset speaker known for being Israelโ€™s most successful gay politician and for being fiercely loyal to the Netanyahu family, and Yariv Levin, the justice minister who spearheaded the contentious judicial reform in 2023.

๐Ÿ›‘ Many prominent Likud figures from the outgoing parliament fared poorly in the primaries and are unlikely be returned to the next one. These tended to fall into two rather different categories.

First were the far-right firebrands whose provocative statements were often seen as alienating centre-right voters, as well as providing grist for the mills of anti-Israel activists abroad.

Together with them were senior Likud figures with more sober reputations who had been seen as potential Netanyahu successors, but whose loyalty to the long-reigning Prime Minister had been questioned.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Turnout for the Likud primary was slightly higher than the last time the party put together a list for a general election in 2022. Of the parties roughly 140,000 registered members, nearly 54 per cent showed up to vote in the primary in the middle of summer holidays.

Find out below who secured the top positions on the list, and visit our Election Centre for further details, including who lost out.

IDF troops on a special mission in Lebanon found and recovered the remains of First Sgt. Yehuda Katz, the last IDF soldier who has been missing-in-action ever since the 1982 battle of Sultan Yaakoub in the first Lebanon War.

The IDF informed Katzโ€™s family this morning.

In 2019, the Syrian opposition released a document from 1984 indicating that Katz had been buried by the Syrian army alongside Zachary Baumel and Zvi Feldman, two other Israeli soldiers who were killed and went missing in the same battle.

The battle of Sultan Yaakoub was fought against the Syrian army on June 11, 1982, on the sixth day of the first Lebanon War. Twenty-two IDF soldiers were killed in the battle, more than 30 were wounded and two soldiers were captured alive and were held as POWs until they were returned to Israel at a later date.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Likudโ€™s primaries are in full swing today. Some 140,000 party members are taking part in the process that will determine the list Prime Minister Netanyahu leads into this Octoberโ€™s Knesset election.

The results could prove career-ending for several household names, as 114 candidates are competing for a limited number of electable positions.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด Israeli search-and-rescue experts are being deployed to Colombia following the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake, which has killed hundreds and left communities facing widespread destruction.

Israelโ€™s specialist rescue teams are internationally recognised for their expertise in locating and extracting people trapped beneath collapsed buildings. They combine structural engineering, advanced search technology, medical support and rapid intelligence-led rescue techniques.

That expertise has also been tested and refined at home. Israelโ€™s emergency services and Home Front Command have repeatedly rescued civilians from buildings struck by missiles fired from Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.

The same skills used to save Israeli lives, from assessing unstable structures to finding survivors beneath rubble, are now being placed at the service of the Colombian people.

โค๏ธ Our thoughts are with all those affected, and with the rescue teams working around the clock to save lives.

For the first three decades of Israelโ€™s existence, the state and its institutions were shaped by the Israeli left.

In Israelโ€™s first election, in 1949, parties of the left and centre-left collectively secured an overwhelming majority of 69 of the 120 seats in the first Knesset.

Today, however, as the next election approaches, the leftโ€™s best hope is to return to government as a junior coalition partner.

Explore the story of Israelโ€™s left in our Knesset 2026 Election Centre. Our long-read covers:

A primary election was held for the main left-wing Zionist party. The Democrats, led by Yair Golan and formed by the merger of Labour and Meretz, held an open election where party members could select up to eight candidates on the list.

The vote garnered much attention from local media, and the turnout was remarkably high with over 97 thousand voters casting their vote underscoring Golanโ€™s efforts to rejuvenate the left.

๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ The turnout means that over 86 per cent of party members voted, a figure unseen in primary elections in Israel, where turnout normally hovers between 50 and 70 per cent. The Democrats are currently polling at around 11 mandates.

The rules adopted by the party ensure that both women and Arab Israelis will be represented on the list. The Democratsโ€™ right-wing counterpart, Likud, is set to determine the rules for its own primaries. The decision is expected this Sunday at the earliest.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The involvement of party members and the public underscores the depth of Israelโ€™s democratic process and the fact that the country is the only democracy in the region.
