GEO in London - Study Abroad in London with Global Education Oregon

[Formerly AHA] GEO in London uses London as its classroom and provides programmes in a variety of subjects for university students from all over the USA.

Global Education Oregon (GEO) was formed in the spring of 2015; an integration of AHA International, founded in 1957, and University of Oregon study abroad programmes. GEO is dedicated to increasing intercultural competency and international awareness for university students throughout the United States. It provides study abroad programmes that support and guide student learning and growth; are academically challenging; and are aligned with the academic, programmatic, and internationalisation goals of GEO’s partner institutions and faculty. By providing transformative international experiences that integrate students' intellectual, intercultural, and personal learning, GEO contributes to the development of active, informed, and culturally competent global citizens. Building on twenty-five years of academic excellence, the GEO in London Centre offers multi-disciplinary courses in various liberal arts subjects, all with a London/UK-emphasis, including:

Music
Film
Academic Internships

Each course places an important emphasis on experiential learning, transforming the entire city of London into a classroom by incorporating several local outings and excursions. Courses take advantage of the world class galleries and museums like the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Modern, the Churchill War Rooms, and of course the British Museum, which is just a short walk from the GEO in London Centre. Each term, students have the opportunity to experience London’s rich theatre options from the West End extravaganzas to smaller, fringe productions with big name actors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Dame Judy Dench, and Sir Patrick Stewart. We take students on overnight trips to Scotland, Wales and Stratford-upon-Avon, and day trips include Brighton, Oxford, Bath and Cambridge. Although part of the University of Oregon in the US, GEO in London is a UK company in its own right, and a registered charity (number 1113838)

Last but not least is our Global Sports Business Strategy in London Students! 🇬🇧

One of the highlights of the programme was an education workshop with Spurs in the Community ! The students were able to gain an insight into how a modern football club operates as a global business with talks from members of the club covering Spurs in the Community, partnerships, broadcasting rights, club strategy and marketing. The students watched Tottenham vs Newcastle United with the students getting the full Tottenham experience with Newcastle coming away with the win! ⚽

The students also spent two days working with the Fulham FC Foundation team at Craven Cottage looking at the work that the Fulham Foundation do and how they use sport to support the local community. They were then challenged by the CEO of Fulham Pier to develop a project to help maximise revenue at Fulham Pier. The students presented their ideas to a panel consisting of members of the Fulham team! The students finished off their Fulham experience with a game against Crystal Palace Football Club !

Visiting Chelsea FC and having a business themed tour of Stamford Bridge

Visiting the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to learn about the 2012 Olympics and sustainability 🥇

Visiting London stadium and watching West Ham vs Wolves!

Spending the day at Wimbledon learning about the business side of the biggest tennis event in the world! 🎾

Heading up to Manchester to visit the Etihad Stadium and Manchester City Academy. Also visiting Old Trafford to look at the Manchester United Brand (and also seeing Bryan Mbeumo !) 🏟️

Visiting Oxford and Iffley Road and learning about history, culture, education and university sports 🎓

Visiting Stoke Mandeville & the National Paralympic Heritage Trust to learn about the origins and legacy of the Paralympic movement in the UK. 🧑🏻‍🦽

Last week we also said goodbye to our Intro to Global Leadership: Pre-Freshman students! 👋🏻

A big thank you to Trish Dorman, who we once again welcomed to London! 🇬🇧🤝🏻🇺🇸

During their time in London, the students were welcomed to Craven Cottage by the amazing Fulham FC Foundation team for a two-day workshop exploring the charitable arm of Fulham Football Club and how the club uses sport to support and engage with the local community. They also had the opportunity to watch Fulham Vs Crystal Palace with Fulham coming up just short on the day! ⚽

Beyond their time with Fulham, the students had the chance to explore Oxford, enjoyed a performance of SIX , explore the Churchill War Rooms, experience a relaxing sound bath by Sahana Sound / Leah Powell | Sound Healing | Meditation | Wellness . They also had the opportunity to hear from a range of guest speakers who shared their experiences and perspectives throughout the programme.

Last week we said goodbye to the last of our Summer programmes!

A big thank you to Sharon Paul who came over from Eugene to teach on our Music, Arts and Culture programme and help make the summer such a memorable experience!

During their time in the UK, the Music, Arts and Culture students experienced plenty of what the UK has to offer with a train up to Liverpool, visiting Cambridge, spending the day in Greenwich, watching multiple BBC Proms Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall , watching A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe (with some students even managing to go on stage and show the UK what the US has to offer in terms of dance moves!) and that's just to make some of the amazing things that they got up to during their time here! 💃🏻🕺🏻

From all of us in London, we hope you had a safe journey home and take plenty of great memories with you! If you ever find yourself back in London, you're always welcome to pop in for a visit! 🙂🇬🇧

Although our Summer students are still making the most of London, on Monday we welcomed our Fall students to the city! 🇬🇧🍂

After a few informative orientation sessions, we hopped on the bus down to Borough Market where they were able to try all kinds of different street food! 🥙🌮

Afterwards everyone took a stroll along the Southbank, learning a bit more about London along the way and also learning about the surprising history of goosebumps 👀

The day finished with a spin on the London Eye where we got some amazing views of London!🎡

On Tuesday we had the one and only Meghan Powers pop in for a visit!

Meghan studied on our Liberal Arts programme back in Spring 2019 and left Amanda a small spider plant as a parting gift. It's safe to say it's grown quite a bit since then! 🪴

Last but not least is our Advancing your Academic Success: Pre-Freshmen Studies in London students! ✨

The students have already explored much of London through their London: Biography of a City class, gaining a deeper understanding of the history of London! 🇬🇧

The students have plenty of exciting excursions still to come, including a range of theatre productions as part of their The Play's the Thing class, where they'll experience some of the very best of London's world-renowned theatre scene with some of the actors even coming into GEO for a visit! 🎭

It's already been a week and our programmes haven't wasted a minute of their first week in London! 🇬🇧

Over the course of the last week the Politics students visited the Royal Albert Hall to watch Sibelius's Second, watched Love Labour's Lost at Shakespeare's Globe, had an amazing tour of the Tower of London (definitely not being biased!), explored the story of Black Music in Brixton and also had a tour of the Houses of Parliament (good to get the tour in now before they move it to Manchester!) 😅

With three weeks left of the programme, the students still have plenty to look forward to over the coming weeks!

On Monday we welcomed students on our Politics, Summer Business, and Advancing Your Academic Success: Pre-Freshman Studies in London programmes as they begin their study abroad experience in the UK! 🇬🇧✨

Over the coming weeks, they'll be exploring London, learning from a wide range of guest speakers, experiencing British culture, and making the most of everything the city has to offer!

We hope everyone has an unforgettable time, gains valuable experiences, and creates memories that will last long after their programme comes to an end!🌍📚

And that's a wrap for one first set of Summer programmes!

Yesterday we said goodbye to our PR and Advertising, Transforming Organisations and Media and Sports students. A big thank you to our local faculty who we've worked with for the past few months and a MASSIVE thank you to Autumn and John who have come over from Eugene to teach on our programmes this year! ♥️

The biggest thank you as always is to the students! We hope you all enjoyed your time in London and we're happy to class you all of you as honorary Brits 🦆🇬🇧
