Plastics Historical Society: From Bakelite to Xylonite Membership of PHS is open to anyone interested in plastics, rubbers and other polymers.

The society's international membership is drawn from collectors, industry, education, museum staff, libraries, and auction houses, and represents all age groups. The Plastics Historical Society was formed in 1986 and was first to draw attention to the heritage of the plastics industry and to celebrate all things plastic,; from Bakelite to Xylonite.

“Spotlight on MoDiP’s latest exhibition”

The presentation will explore some of the objects on display in the Museum of Design in Plastics’ latest exhibition, Spotlight on…3. This is the third in a series of exhibitions that put the spotlight on manufacturers and designers who embrace plastics as a material of value. This exhibition celebrates the work of 11 designers who have used plastics in their work to some extent. Find out what the designers have in common and the significance of the designer to the object, the consumer, and to museums and their audiences.
The featured designers are: Katty Barac, Dorothee Becker, Maria Benktzon, Anne Castelli Ferrieri, Anya Hindmarch, Belle Kogan, Isabella Lovero,
Stella McCartney, Miriam Mirri, Libuše Niklová and Patricia Urquiola

Biography

Dr Louise Dennis is the Curator of MoDiP, the Museum of Design in Plastics, based at the Arts University Bournemouth, UK. MoDiP is the only UK Accredited museum with a focus on plastics and has been awarded Designated Outstanding Collection status by Arts Council England. Louise’s research explores the value of the museum and its specialist focus, with a particular interest in the various relationships surrounding materiality and museum objects. Through her work with the museum, she aims to show the value of plastics materials when used appropriately, and hopes that, by learning from the past, manufacturers, designers and consumers can make better informed choices.
