Turning your room into home.

When you checked into your room, with your three suitcases, it may have felt cold, empty and a little lonely. But your story is just beginning.

The blank wall will become home to a gallery of memories you will make during the course of the year. Little gifts from family and friends will remind you that you have a community that loves and supports you. A window that once looked out onto an unfamiliar street will start to feel like your own view. Something small carried from home, tucked onto a shelf, will remind you of where you started. A plant you’re keeping alive, fairy lights for the quiet nights, a few good books, all the tiny things that don’t mean much on their own, will start to mean everything together.

Feeling at home doesn’t happen overnight. It will take a collection of big and small sentimental things that remind you of the places and the people you have experienced life with. And slowly, but surely, that quiet empty room will be somewhere that you call home.

For the first couple of weeks, I ate dinner in my room.

Not because I wanted to. The shared kitchen was right there, warm and loud. And full of people who all seemed to already know each other. But walking in alone, cooking a sad bowl of pasta while strangers laughed about things I wasn’t part of, felt harder than just taking my plate upstairs and eating in front of my laptop. So that’s what I did. Every night. Telling myself I’d be more sociable tomorrow, when I felt less tired, less new, less like the only person in the entire building who hadn’t found her people yet.

If you’re about to move to a place where you know no one, please read this. Because that lonely fortnight was, it turns out, completely unnecessary. I just didn’t know it yet...
