Hammersmith United Charities

Hammersmith United Charities Hammersmith's charity since 1618. Exceptional sheltered housing and focused grant making. Building a legacy for the people of Hammersmith.

Hammersmith United Charities invests in the people and communities in the 8 northern wards of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham to tackle poverty, deprivation and disadvantage, building on our legacies, wisdom, learning and experience gained over 400 years. We support local people to build their confidence and resourcefulness, develop their own talents and skills, connect people together

and strengthen relationships and neighbourliness within and across diverse communities. We achieve these aims by:

•managing vibrant sheltered housing communities for older people where residents work alongside the Charity’s gardener and horticulturalist to make safe beautiful environments for people to share and enjoy as neighbours
•funding a community based grants programme
•match funding the Wormholt & White City Big Local with the Lottery; and
•by working with local people, organisations and businesses to make Hammersmith a great place.”

Most of us need someone to turn to at times – someone who will listen without judgement and offer advice and support. However, not everyone has that safety net. It’s all too easy to feel isolated from your peers if you’re new to the area, English isn’t your first language or you’re shy.

Family Friends Family Friends supports families in a number of ways, including through a games group for young people, a coffee and community group for parents, a walk and talk group for families, and a monthly SEN group. However, at the heart of the service is its befriending scheme, which matches volunteers with adults or young people who are struggling and need someone to talk to.

As anyone who’s ever experienced loneliness knows, it can feel all consuming. Not having someone to talk to, to discuss life’s highs and lows with, and to rely on for comfort and solace, can feel like a very heavy burden to bear.

While there are no easy fixes for loneliness, joining a supportive community can help you to connect with people and find new friends.

Almshouses offer that supportive community. Homes are often arranged around shared courtyards and gardens, with communal spaces designed to encourage neighbourly support and interaction. Many almshouses are located at the heart of the wider community, helping residents stay connected to familiar services, activities and opportunities. Staff are often on hand to provide practical support and facilitate activities that help residents build friendships and maintain meaningful social connections.

This sense of community is particularly important at a time when loneliness and social isolation are increasingly recognised as major challenges for older people. By creating environments where people can get to know their neighbours, participate in activities and feel part of something larger than themselves, almshouses help foster belonging and connection.

Do you want to make new friends, learn new skills and give back to your community? There are hundreds of volunteering opportunities available across Hammersmith. As one of our residents, Lorraine, shares, “I've made such a good circle of friends. We go away together. They have parties in their houses and we celebrate birthdays together. Before I started volunteering, my circle of friends was small, and it's like a pond that has just rippled out and out.”

“The thing that most lights up the brain is social interaction and laughter. We walk, we cycle, we have parties, we have coffee mornings. It’s a space away from worries; there’s no need to divulge a diagnosis or fill in a referral form.” For Brian CIC runs dementia- and disability-inclusive activities in Old Oak. For , we’ve been talking to our Head of Grants and Community, Paul Robson, who started working here when he was 65. As well as paid work, Paul volunteers for two charities. He shares, “We all do a mixture of things throughout our lives – a bit of paid work, a bit of learning, a bit of caring for others, a bit of leisure time, maybe a bit of community work. How you balance that and use your time, effort, mental energy and physical energy, is in flux throughout your life; the size of each slice of the pie changes.”
