MdS Legendary 40th edition ~ good luck to & all desert warriors braving over 150km of the harshest terrain on earth over the next few days

03/04/2026

And they're off! The 40th edition of is now upon us 💪 Whether you'll be following along from the comfort of a sofa...or immersing yourself in a match-the-distance challenge in the style of the unstoppable , it's hard to describe what the competitors will be pushing themselves through, both mentally and physically, over the next week. Safe to say we know the journey to the Sahara for all runners is a labour of love, waged over weeks, months and seasons. That said, not much is truly comparable to life with a debilitating spinal cord injury. A little more about the incredible shortly, but good luck to everyone all set to pound the sands...you got this! 🐪

A little heat acclimation before enduring a 250km desert ultramarathon over 6 consecutive stages might not be compulsory...but at temperatures out on the sands often exceeding 50°F, it's probably worth considering!

Be it direct stimulation active heat training (treadmill within an environmental chamber, overdressed running) or non-passive (post-workout saunas, hot yoga) etc, your body will thank you 💪

But don't just take our word for it, behold above 2 of our Walkoncemore MdS Legendary 2026 desert warrior team, James and Lewis, on the home stretch to next month's sandy startline 🔥

Special thanks to MRes student Erin Gibson and Dr Freya Bayne at LSBU for their kind support...and please do consider the wonderfully helpful team at London South Bank University for all your acclimation requirements 🐪

Patience is a lot to ask someone who has sustained a spinal cord injury. After such a devastating life-event and often, near-death experience, the 'grin and bear it' aspect can seem an almost inhuman ask. That can also be true for the loved ones of anyone affected, leading to feelings of pure helplessness and desperation which never really find a place to truly land. That's why victims will describe how the injury often feels more like a sentence.

The good news about patience though? It pays off. With every passing hour, great minds are working to bring this very fact to life in the area of chronic SCI cure research.

"Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you" ~ Ovid

However you celebrate, we hope you find lots of reasons to smile over this festive period!

We can't thank you enough for your incredible support this past year. There is a definite momentum building, and we very much look forward to moving into 2026 at such an exciting time in the field of chronic spinal cood injury research.

Continuing to send strength and support to anyone out there who has been touched by SCI, both directly or otherwise. As the old adage goes...'nothing stays the same, brighter days ahead'.

With September being Spinal Cord Injury awareness month, it's another point in the year to observe the challenges faced by individuals and families impacted by SCI. While that side of the coin will always remain heartbreaking, this is also an opportunity to feel enthused and encouraged by recent strides in research across the board. When it comes to a cure, all good things lie on the horizon 💚
