Introducing our first headliner... Koushik Banerjea! Koushik will be reading from his most recent novel Animal Nightlife: A rapturous, kaleidoscopic portrait of contemporary Britain and the myriad immigrant experiences that informed it, from the 1950s to a present-day landscape of racism, class division and economic decay, told through the voices of othered outsiders who just happen to be half-human, half-avian...

Koushik Banerjea is a London-based writer and novelist. His debut novel, Another Kind of Concrete, was published in 2020 by Jacaranda Books. The follow-up, Category Unknown, was published by London Books in 2022. Animal Nightlife won 2nd Prize in the 2023 Novel London Literary Competition. His short stories and poetry have appeared in multiple magazines and small presses including Minor Literatures, Tangerine Press, Renard Press, Writers Resist and Aeos, and have been finalists for the London Independent Story Prize 2025, the REIGN Prize 2025 and the Jerry Jazz Musician Short Fiction Contest 2024. He has been a guest on the Robert Elms BBC Radio London show, and usually has plenty to say away from the mic too.

Copies of Animal Nightlife will be available for purchase on the night (cash only).

Free  Eventbrite tickets are available in our bio.

A massive thank you to Dierdre Finnerty for joining us to discuss her Irish Times bestseller: Bessborough. Three Women. Three Decades. Three Stories of Courage. It was deeply moving to explore the experiences of those placed within mother and daughter institutions, the shame, trauma and fear imprinted upon them, and the bravery to speak up against these injustices. We'd also like to thank our attendees for discussing the stories and the history behind it in a sensitive, reflective manner.

Bessborough House, a grand country mansion on the outskirts of Cork city, operated as one of Ireland's biggest mother and baby institutions. Women and girls who walked up its stone steps were warned never to reveal their true identities and gave birth to babies they would not be allowed to keep.

Bessborough. Three Women. Three Decades. Three Stories of Courage allows a trio of remarkable women confined there in the 60s, 70s and 80s, tell their truths. Their vivid accounts take us right inside the walls of the secretive institution and give us a deep insight into how their experiences impacted their lives afterwards. The result is a stark portrait of a system that split families apart - and a moving account of love, loss and reconnection.
