Former minister Alan Milburn, has conducted a major review into youth inactivity, revealing that the government spends 25 times as much on benefits for young people than it does supporting them to find work.

With nearly a million 16-24 year olds not in work, training or education, Milburn concludes that a "system reset" is needed urgently.

At ORT UK, we recognise the desperate need for better careers education for young people, to help motivate them to find meaningful employment. That's why we run the ORT JUMP Mentoring and Employability Skills Training Programmes for secondary school-aged students, which align with government benchmarks and encourage teens to start considering potential career journeys.

We work with 14 schools, offering guidance to over 1500 students each year. Our partner schools are incredibly grateful for the work we do with their students; developing skills and behaviours which will increase their employment prospects, opening their eyes to pathways that suit their passions and capabilities and most importantly, giving them the confidence to pursue their goals.

We believe that every child deserves the same opportunity so we offer the programmes free of charge, relying on over 500 volunteers working within 90 different industries to offer guidance. We also heavily rely on our supporters' generosity to fund our programmes.

However, demand is rising rapidly and we need more funding in order to expand and ensure a brighter future for the next generation.

If you can help us JUMP-start young people's career journeys we would love to hear from you. Please email [email protected]

Reforms are needed of the welfare system to tackle the high numbers of young people not in work or education, says Alan Milburn.

Our CEO, Jude Jackson, and trustee, Elliot Goodman, spent the week in Vilnius, Lithuania with leaders and educators from across the ORT network.

The annual meeting, of both lay leaders and directors, was a valuable opportunity to connect and learn from one another. With new leadership both in World ORT and ORT UK, the conference allowed the international ORT community to celebrate the legacy of ORT and plan the future direction with a dynamic vision for the whole organisation.

Travelling to Vilnius was particularly meaningful. Before the Holocaust it was known as the Jerusalem of the North and was home to around 210,000 Jews, having flourished as a Jewish intellectual and cultural hub for centuries. Tragically, only 5% survived.

In the Paneriai Forest, where the Jewish community were once forced to dig their own graves, the ORT global Jewish family joined in a ceremony with public officials. Lithuanian dignitaries laid wreaths, Israeli Ambassador, Shelly Hugler Livne, delivered a moving speech and a choir from World ORT’s Sholom Aleichem School filled the silence with voices of hope from the next generation.

As well as important presentations and meetings, the week included many impactful visits which included visiting the impressive ORT school in Vilnius, visiting the Šeduva Lost Shtetl Museum and attending a tour of Jewish Vilnius, including the beautiful synagogue.

The conference allowed time to reflect on the role of ORT UK in the context of the wider World ORT community, returning with a renewed sense of responsibility, as a charity based in Jewish values which continues to deliver life- changing programmes to all young people.

Jude said, “The World ORT conference was inspirational. Spending time with our international colleagues and now friends, is shining a spotlight for collaboration, learning and growing together.”
