Baby Loss Awareness UK Baby Loss Awareness Week is made up of 130+ charities that support people affected by baby loss.

October 15 2002 was the inaugural Baby Loss Awareness Day in the UK and was initiated by a group of parents inspired by Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day in the United States. Through the sale of, handmade blue and pink ribbon pins they raised several thousand pounds for UK organisations supporting bereaved parents. The 2003 the campaign saw the day expanded to a week with events across the

UK. The very first official β€˜Wave of Light’ service in the UK was held at the American Church in London and was attended by representatives and members of each participating organisation. There were also services held across the UK from Scotland to Surrey. Once again, the ribbon pins were made and sold by bereaved parents. The 2004 campaign was a more formal collaboration between the five organisations involved which included Sands, the Miscarriage Association, the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, ARC and Babyloss.com. The ribbon pins were commercially manufactured and balloon releases were held in several locations. The group organised a secular service at the Royal Statistical Society in London and there were over twenty other events around the UK. In 2006 the distinctive two colour ribbon was introduced and the ribbon pins were once again made by bereaved parents with the help of their family and friends. Since 2010 Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity has played a pivotol role within the organisation of the week and since 2014 has taken a lead role to promote the week as part of its work raising awareness of the issues surrounding pregnancy and baby loss in the UK.

On behalf of the Baby Loss Awareness Week Alliance, we would like to congratulate The Lily Mae Foundation founders, and Lily Mae’s Parents, Ryan and Amy Jackson after being awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) πŸŽ–οΈ

Ryan and Amy set up The Lily Mae Foundation in 2010 following the loss of their very special little girl, Lily Mae.

The Lily Mae Foundation, a BLAW Alliance charity, supports parents and families in the West Midlands and Warwickshire who have lost a baby to stillbirth, neonatal death, miscarriage, or TFMR.

Their inclusion in the 2026 New Year Honours list is very well deserved πŸ©·πŸ’™

πŸ’– An Honour for Our Incredible Founders! πŸ’–
We are absolutely bursting with pride to announce that our wonderful founders and Lily Mae’s Parents, Ryan and Amy Jackson, have both been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2026 New Year Honours list!

This prestigious award is in recognition of their incredible dedication and service to bereaved parents and families through The Lily Mae Foundation. From turning their own tragedy into a source of support for thousands, their impact is immeasurable.

A message from Ryan and Amy….

β€œWe are truly shocked and overwhelmingly grateful for this honour. Reflecting on the journey that led us here, it all began with the devastating loss of our beautiful daughter, Lily Mae, who was stillborn in February 2010. In 2012, we established The Lily Mae Foundation in her memory, and since then, it has become a source of vital hope and support for thousands of families navigating the devastating loss of a baby.

This is not just an honour for us; it is an honour for Lily Mae. When we first held our stillborn daughter, our world shattered. The grief was indescribable and in that darkest moment, we knew we had to find a way to make sure other parents didn't feel so utterly alone.

Receiving the British Empire Medal (BEM) is a moment of deeply humbling pride but the true recognition belongs to every single person who has supported our work, our staff, every volunteer who gives their time and crucially every bereaved family who has trusted us to walk alongside them. This medal is a testament to the strength of a community bound by love, loss and the fierce determination to keep our babies' memories alive.

Our work is driven entirely by love and the memory of all the families we support. We dedicate this BEM to all the babies gone too soon, especially our beautiful Lily Mae. Their lives, however short, matter eternally. We started this Foundation with broken hearts, but it is their memory that fuels us to provide Memory Boxes and vital bereavement support programmes to families in their hour of need.

To our staff, the volunteers, the trustees, the corporate partners and every individual donor; thank you! Your compassion and generosity have built and shaped The Lily Mae Foundation into what it is today. You have turned our pain into purpose and you have ensured that the legacy of love continues to grow. We accept this honour on behalf of every single one of you.

This honour cements our commitment and dedication to ensuring that essential support is available to all families that need us. We will continue to fight for better care, better resources and a more compassionate world for bereaved parents. Thank you, from the depths of our hearts, for seeing our work and for helping us keep Lily Mae's legacy shining bright.”

Today is πŸ’–πŸ’™

Baby Loss Awareness Week gives us a special time to come together, remember our babies, raise awareness, and call for change. It's also a really intense and busy week.

This year our community ran over 300 events, lit up over 110 Pink and Blue buildings and thousands took part in the Wave of Light.

But, we also remember our much-loved and much missed babies, every day.

So, we want to remind you that self-care, and showing kindness to yourself, is an important activity to try to do. Not just during awareness weeks and days, but in our daily lives too.

Here are some top tips for you:
☺️ remember, it’s okay to just take one day at a time – focus on today
πŸ’™ do something to help you feel connected to your baby
πŸ₯— eat and drink mindfully
πŸšΆπŸ½β€β™€οΈ do some gentle movement, connect with nature – even a short walk outside can be helpful
πŸ“΅ set boundaries or limit time spent on social media
