Rhys Williams and Geraint Davies are representing the Worshipful Company of Carmen at the RHA Traffic Commissioner Regional Briefings in Bridgend tonight.

Looking back: The Master’s Cart Hire

One of the distinctive traditions surrounding a Carmen Installation is the Master’s Cart Hire – and over the years they have come in many different forms.

Past Masters Colonel Simon Bennett and Nick Laister chose very different vehicles, but both carried a special connection to Junior Warden-Elect Joy Laister and her family’s transport history.

Joy’s maternal great-grandfather was a carter in Manchester in the early 1900s, delivering b**r by horse and dray.

Her 1915 Fiat Box Van has another extraordinary story. The vehicle was used as an ambulance in France during the First World War, while Joy’s paternal great-grandfather was a British Army officer involved in establishing field hospitals there – meaning he may even have encountered the vehicle during his service.

Transport history is often personal history too – and stories like these are part of what makes the Carmen’s traditions so special.

Looking back: Masters of the Carmen

On 16 October 2024, Master David Pugsley and his Consort Sarah led the procession to St Lawrence Jewry for the Installation and Re-Dedication Service.

There, Leon Daniels OBE was installed as Master Carman, with Andrew Miles becoming Senior Warden and Allison Kemp MBE Junior Warden.

Appropriately for the Carmen, the Master’s Cart Hire was a bus, driven by Court Assistant Paul Sainthouse.

The celebration lunch followed at Carpenters’ Hall – with some Carmen naturally choosing to make the journey there by bus.

Transport and tradition brought together perfectly.

Looking back: Masters of the Carmen

Later that same year, on 18 October 2023, David Pugsley was installed as Master of the Worshipful Company of Carmen, with his Consort Sarah alongside him.

Following a change in the succession, David stepped forward to become Master, joined by Leon Daniels as Senior Warden and Andy Miles as Junior Warden.

David brought plenty of personality, fun and spontaneity to his year as Master – including, on more than one occasion, Carmen finding themselves performing jazz hands at a moment’s notice!

A year remembered with plenty of smiles.

Congratulations to Tim Levene on taking office as Sheriff of the City of London.

As Tim’s Mother Company, the Worshipful Company of Carmen was proud to form a guard of honour and es**rt him into Guildhall to take the oath of office alongside Sheriff and Alderman Prem Goyal CBE.

The Master was joined by Past Master David Pugsley, Court Assistant Paul Sainthouse, Clerk Sharon Kindleysides, Liveryman Geoffrey Drust and Freeman Sherry Jessup. A proud day for Tim and for the Company.

Looking back: Masters of the Carmen

On 20 October 2021 Nick Laister became master of The Worshipful Company of Carmen, the late Andrew Turner became Senior warden and Iain Golder became Junior Warden.

The installation service was held in St Stephen Walbrook Church, designed by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666, the church was described by Sir John Summerson as ‘the pride of English Architecture.’

The modern altar was created by Yorkshire sculptor Henry Moore.

It is also the ‘Home of Samaritans’ founded at St Stephen Walbrook by Rector Dr Chad Varah in 1953. St Stephen Walbrook continues to shine as a beacon of faith and community within the Square Mile.

Following the celebration lunch at the Worshipful Company of Grocers, the newly installed Master Carman Nick Laister presented Liveryman Clive Warcup, a very proud Yorkshireman, with a lifetime achievement award for his over 50 years of outstanding contributions to our industry.

Looking back: Masters of the Carmen

The Installation of Peter Cordrey on 21 October 2020 was unlike any other.

With Covid restrictions limiting outdoor gatherings to six people, Master-Elect Peter Cordrey, outgoing Master Simon Bennett, Senior Warden-Elect Nick Laister and Junior Warden-Elect Andrew Turner met in Peter’s garden with the Clerk and photographer.

Even Peter’s wife and Consort, Carol, had to temporarily leave the property while photographs were taken to ensure the restrictions were observed.

Peter’s Installation Ceremony itself was conducted by Zoom.

A very different moment in Carmen history – and proof that even in extraordinary circumstances, the traditions of the Company continued.
