Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust

Kevin Kararwa Leukaemia Trust We create awareness, educate, engage and offer support to those suffering from leukaemia and other blood cancers.

“Anyone can be a hero”

Since being established in 2015, KKLT has sought to engage with BAME (black & minority ethnic communities to raise awareness of Leukaemia, educate and inform the community about Stem Cell Donation (commonly known as bone marrow donation), and encourage individuals to join the stem cell registry. Our aim is to increase the number of potential stem cell donors in the registry thus increasing BME community’s survival rates. We have done this through delivering presentations, distributing information leaflets, use of social media, organising events, seeking speaking opportunities in various BAME community gatherings, and partnering with places of worship to talk and holding registration drives. More recently we have started to expand our services to include the distribution of food parcels and provide emotional and physical support to people with blood cancers and their families, thus reducing their isolation/loneliness and increasing their emotional and mental well-being.

At just 10 months old, baby Reuben, known to his family as "Roo", was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). 💔
He'd had a high temperature for several days. At first his family thought it was teething, and his GP suspected tonsillitis. Follow-up blood tests showed it was blood cancer. Reuben and his family have been at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge ever since.
Doctors have told them Reuben needs a stem cell transplant, because without one his leukaemia could come back after chemotherapy. His mum Mary, a paramedic, says the hardest part is "the waiting and not knowing" whether a match will be found.
Blood cancer is the most common cancer among children, teenagers and young adults in the UK, and every new donor gives a family like Roo's more hope.

👉 If you're aged 16–30, you can join the register. It starts with a simple cheek swab.
👉 Not eligible? Share this post. Someone on your feed could be his match.

September may be coming to an end, but the fight against blood cancer doesn’t stop here.

Throughout Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’ve been raising awareness, sharing information and shining a light on the experiences of people affected by blood cancers.

But awareness shouldn’t last for just one month. Every day is an opportunity to learn, support, donate, advocate and make a difference.

🩸 Learn the signs and symptoms
❤️ Support someone affected by blood cancer
🧬 Learn about stem cell and blood donation
🤝 Help raise awareness in your community
💙 Support organisations working to improve lives and outcomes

Let’s take the message beyond September and keep the conversation going.

Fans of EastEnders are following an emotional storyline as Denise Fox, played by Diane Parish, continues her battle with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).

After months of chemotherapy, Denise now needs a suitable stem-cell donor for a potentially life-saving transplant. Her family is facing growing uncertainty as they search for a possible match.

Her newly discovered half-brother, Darnell Larson, could potentially help, but agreeing to be tested is proving difficult. His concerns about hospitals have created another emotional challenge for the family.

The storyline also highlights an important real-world issue: finding a stem-cell donor can be particularly difficult for people from Black and other minority ethnic backgrounds because donor matching depends on genetic characteristics.

Diane Parish has spoken about the importance of increasing the number of people from under-represented communities joining stem-cell donor registers, saying that a simple swab or blood test could potentially help save someone’s life.

💛 Denise’s story is fictional, but the need for stem-cell donors is very real.

“Our world fell apart overnight, and our family has been separated ever since. My daughters are having to stay with their grandparents right now. It still doesn’t feel real.”

10 month old baby Reuben, from Norfolk, urgently needs your help. His parents have received the heartbreaking news that he has acute myeloid leukaemia, and needs a stem cell transplant to survive.

“Reuben had been unwell for a few days, we initially thought he was teething. We never thought it would be anything like leukaemia, it blindsided us. He’s just a baby.”

Reuben’s two sisters, aged 8 and 4, are unfortunately not a match for Reuben, meaning his family are now relying on finding a match from the stem cell register.

“We feel terrible that his sisters are being tested to see if they’re a match for Roo, they’re so little. I am so scared that he might not find a match easily or quickly enough.”

The family are working with Anthony Nolan to encourage young people to join the stem cell register to help save the lives of people like Reuben.

“We want to make something positive come from our situation by calling on people to join the register, for our little Roo and for anyone else in need.”

💚If you’re aged 16-30, you could be that lifesaving match someone like Reuben is waiting for. Sign up today: www.anthonynolan.org/register4roo
