After 40 extraordinary years, this week we officially say congratulations and thank you to our Managing Director, Manuel Button, on his retirement from Wandsworth Community Transport

While we marked the occasion formally back in March at the Mayor of Wandsworth’s Parlour, this week Manuel celebrated with friends, colleagues, volunteers and supporters at a wonderful retirement party at Sainsbury's ShopMobility — complete with a live band, food, drinks and many familiar faces who have been part of his journey over the years.

For four decades, Manuel has been at the heart of WCT. What began with one old ambulance, a battered taxi and an electric milk float has grown into a thriving charity supporting thousands of local residents every year through accessible transport and community services.

Under Manuel’s leadership, WCT has become far more than a transport provider. He has always understood that community transport is about independence, dignity, connection and ensuring people remain part of the life of their community.

As an active member of the Community Transport Association, WCT has also played an important role in supporting and strengthening the wider community transport movement — something Manuel has always cared deeply about throughout his leadership.

Reflecting on his retirement, Manuel said:
“It always amazes me when I look back and see how quickly the 40 years have flashed by. And of course I have loved every minute and always enjoyed going to work and being involved with the community.
Brilliant colleagues who have become real friends have made all the difference and the range of people we have worked with — volunteers, drivers, passengers, community groups, Councillors and all the good people of Wandsworth — have always been a great source of interest and inspiration.
Between us we have done a lot of good work and built up a fantastic organisation which I am very proud to be a part of.
Note I am not using the past tense as I very much intend to continue helping out as a volunteer and who knows, this might just be the beginning.”

Hicky Kingsbury Chair of Management Committee said:

“Manuel’s leadership, kindness and unwavering commitment to our community have shaped WCT into the organisation it is today. What he has built over 40 years has changed countless lives across Wandsworth, and his legacy will continue for many years to come. On behalf of the Board, our staff, volunteers and passengers, we thank him for everything he has given to this community — and we are delighted that this is not quite the end of his WCT journey.”

Thank you, Manuel, for 40 remarkable years of service, friendship and dedication ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you to the many people that joined us at our Wandsworth Community Transport AGM — and what a fantastic turnout we had!

A heartfelt thank you to our guest speakers: Cllr Rosemary Birchall, Deputy Mayor of Wandsworth Council and Emma Chisholm, founder of .

This year’s AGM was especially bittersweet as we confirmed that our Managing Director, Manuel Button — a cornerstone of WCT for four decades — is retiring.

2025 marked his final AGM with us, and we look forward to honouring his extraordinary dedication with a celebration in 2026, once our new CEO is in post, and he has retired.

As ever, none of what we do would be possible without our volunteers, staff and supporters — thank you all for helping us deliver accessible transport across Wandsworth.

Our mission remains as important as ever: enabling community groups and individuals with mobility challenges to travel with dignity and confidence. wctbus.org.uk
