Ever since Reliance entered the fashion industry, it has used its vast resources to forge partnerships with the world’s top brands, hoover up much of the design talent of the country and exercise control over fashion media.
Although Isha is part of the leadership at Reliance Retail, the senior fashion journalist said, the word in the industry is that her mother “still calls the shots.” A consultant with the company said that Nita would personally fly to Europe for meetings with top luxury brands.
They described Reliance Brands, a subsidiary of Reliance Retail that manages these partnerships, as “a vanity project” to build the Ambanis’ social profile. It was also a way “to acquire and create a monopoly in the luxury space,” they said. “They’ve cornered every big brand there is.”
