241 bid farewell to Flight Lieutenant Holder, who served as our commanding officer for just under 2 years as she moves to the Midlands to gain her practicing certificate as a barrister.

As she moves on to the next stage in her life, we remember the many successes 241 accomplished under her command. Since her arrival in 2013 she has been an incredible role model, reaching Cadet Warrant Officer, completing her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, receiving the International Air Cadet Exchange scholarship to Turkey, the first Mayor’s Cadet of Redbridge, a flying scholarship, and Deputy Lord Lieutenant representative to name a few. As an Officer, she received an accelerated promotion to Flight Lieutenant after taking command of 241 as a Pilot Officer and a commendation from the Regional Commandant. She is the first ethnic minority and woman, to take Command of 241 since it was founded in 1941. Through our civilian committee and the Worshipful Company of Joiners and Ceilers, she secured funding for a new SOV, IT, expedition and flight simulator equipment. She placed staffing needs, committee strength and the cadet experience at the forefront of her objectives; attracting partnerships with 31, 9F, 1475, 338 Sqns and enhancing No.1 sector.

In her place, Sergeant Leonard will be taking over as the Officer in Command of 241, and will continue to support us through this transition period.

We wish Flight Lieutenant Holder the best for the future, she will be missed by us all. She is truly One of Many and Second to None.

Flight Sergeant Horner, Sergeants Duff and Mootoosamy and Corporals Smith and Tong attended the London Wing SNCO Course, taking part in a range of leadership lessons, classroom instruction, and drill training led by Drill Instructors from around the Wing.

The intense two-day course provided an opportunity to develop their knowledge, confidence, and mentorship skills in preparation for future leadership roles within the squadron. Additionally, Flight Sergeant Horner had the opportunity to experience leading and assessing SNCOs as they progressed through the weekend.

Well done to all five cadets for their commitment and professionalism throughout the course, and for representing 241.

In honour of Warrant Officer Norman McGrath, our cadets formed two teams to compete against each other in the annual McGrath Competition that the squadron holds to remember and celebrate the Warrant Officer with honour.

WO Norman McGrath served at 241 for over 50 years, after having served in World War 2. He dedicated himself to the squadron, and his efforts and dedication to the corps will forever be remembered and appreciated by our cadets.

The McGrath Competition consists of various stalls including drill, log pull, leadership and first aid. Each section competes against each other for first place trophies in all of the stands and, ultimately, first place overall, to decide the best 241 section. Congratulations to 1 Flight for winning this year’s competition. We are proud of our cadets for competing with sportsmanship and for representing the Warrant Officer with dignity.

As part of his presentation of the award, both he and Flight Lieutenant Holder were invited to the Summer Banquet of the Livery Company of Joiners and Ceilers of the City of London, where twelve of our cadets attended as an honourable Carpet Guard.
