When young people are drawn into armed conflict, their lives are shaped by it long after the fighting stops.

Beyond the lifelong trauma of war, they have lost time, lost innocence, lost their sense of control.

In Bosnia-Herzegovina, this project focused on the aftermath of its 1992-1995 war for those who came of age amidst the fighting.
Here, a woman shares how she began to rebuild.

“I Couldn’t Stand By” is a new comic series created by PositiveNegatives with Coventry University, as part of the “Youth, Violence and Conflict Transformation Project”.

The destruction wrought by Islamic militants has left thousands displaced, living in makeshift camps or shanty towns.
As children grow up with nowhere to go, no education and in some cases no statehood, this comic looks at the long-term impact for their wellbeing and security.

Sometimes called the “Revolution of Smiles”, the Hirak was a youth-led movement that swept Algeria in 2019.

Every Friday, the streets filled with protesters, uniting the country to demand justice and change from their government.

Years on, researchers at interviewed young people who had marched, organised and continue to engage in the Algeria’s emerging civil society.
