Universities have paid £400 million in redundancy payouts in a single year, an increase of 60 per cent on the previous 12 months, according to the Sunday Times.

Its analysis of more than 100 universities’ annual accounts reveals that they spent £402 million in the 2024-25 financial year on voluntary and compulsory redundancy payouts, up from £251 million in 2023-24.

Students and staff have been badly let down.

Colleges need stable funding to protect choice, provision and communities.

Nottingham staff will strike on 30 September and 1 October as University Council meets to decide the future of jobs and courses.

Further strike action will run from 5 October to 11 December.

Management can still stop this: rule out compulsory redundancies and protect teaching and research.

You can't switch that capacity back on when the ward is short.

Dundee management wants another £20m in cuts, with 190 jobs at risk and philosophy under threat.

Now academics from Oxford, Yale and across the world are sounding the alarm.
