Every cafe in The Canvas Cafe Collective answers that question differently.

This is Wired Coffee and Cake in Honley, West Yorkshire.

In 2018, husband and wife Oliver and Katie took a leap of faith, leaving behind their wedding cake and cleaning businesses to open WIRED.

From the beginning, connecting people was part of the idea: great coffee and cake, but also somewhere people could meet, socialise and feel welcome.

Over the years, WIRED has become woven into village life.

Families bring newborn babies in to meet relatives. People who don’t feel comfortable going elsewhere alone know they can walk through the door. Staff make time to sit and chat.

And during lockdown, when Oliver and Katie started sharing their local walks online, people began asking if they could join them. Those walks grew into regular free WIRED Walks, bringing people together beyond the cafe too.

For Oliver and Katie, hospitality is about people – and sometimes the measure of success is simply whether someone leaves feeling a little better than when they arrived.

“I wanted a place where people could come and feel welcome, comfortable and safe,” says Oliver.

“As I always say to our customers, if you leave here a little happier than when you came, that makes us happy too.”

“I think every village should have a hub where people can just catch up.”

What does a community cafe look like?

Every cafe in The Canvas Cafe Collective answers that question differently.

This is Sibling in Roath, Cardiff.

Brother and sister Georgie and Will opened Sibling in 2021, after transforming a former brothel into the neighbourhood cafe they’d long dreamed of.

Even before the doors opened, they invited more than 100 neighbours into the building site for mulled wine and mince pies. It was an early glimpse of the welcoming neighbourhood cafe that Sibling would become.

Community at Sibling happens in the everyday.

Around its shared tables, strangers meet and friendships form. Children who first arrived as newborns grow up coming to the cafe. Christmas Eve coffee has become a tradition.

It’s in the small interactions too: remembering people, making space at the table, knowing when someone needs a chat, helping people feel at home.

As Georgie and Will put it:

“The community is a huge part of what brings us joy.”

We are proud to have Sibling as one of the founding members of the Canvas Cafe Collective.

What does a community cafe. look like?

Every cafe in The Canvas Cafe Collective answers that question differently.

This is TAG Café | Coffee Shop Eastcote in Eastcote, North West London.

TAG opened in January 2020. Just five weeks later, the country went into lockdown.

Owner Hovig had always wanted the cafe to play an active role in its community. Covid accelerated those plans and, instead of waiting, TAG started finding ways to support the people around it.

That meant delivering drinks to vaccination centres, baking for local schools and becoming a collection point for donations to Ukraine. Today, it means continuing to work alongside schools, community groups and local businesses to strengthen Eastcote.

Hovig talks a lot about hospitality.

Not as an industry, but as a way of serving people.

As he puts it:

“The space that we’ve got is bigger than us.”

What does a community cafe look like?

Every cafe in The Canvas Cafe Collective answers that question differently.

This is Kiju Coffee & Event Space in Battersea, London.

Kiju is a women-led Vietnamese coffee house, event space and community hub, founded by cousins Kim and Julie.

Growing up, community spaces and youth centres gave them somewhere to belong. Years later, as they reconnected, they realised they shared the same dream: to create a place that carried that same spirit forward for others.

Today, Kiju celebrates Vietnamese culture through food, coffee and hospitality. It hosts community events, opens its doors for local gatherings and welcomes people as if they’re guests in the family home. Conversations matter, people are remembered, and regulars quickly become part of the extended Kiju family.

One of the things Kim loves most about running Kiju is being able to say yes.

Whether it’s a community event, a creative idea or a local group looking for somewhere to meet, the instinct isn’t to ask, “Will this work?”

It’s to ask:

“How can we make it happen?”

As Kim says:

“Belonging is a human need.”

What does a community cafe look like?

Every cafe in The Canvas Cafe Collective answers that question differently.

This is INFUSE | Tea Bar in Coleraine, Northern Ireland.

When Áine and Duncan opened Northern Ireland’s only tea bar, they thought they were creating somewhere people could enjoy loose-leaf tea and speciality coffee.

The front counter doubled as the kitchen, so conversations happened naturally. Customers became friends. People shared what was happening in their lives.

Gradually, they realised they weren’t simply serving drinks anymore.

They had become somewhere people turned when they needed somewhere safe to be.

Today, INFUSE hosts community groups and inclusive events, bringing together neurodivergent and neurotypical people, alongside people from different backgrounds and cultures. They’re now exploring becoming a Community Interest Company so they can create even more opportunities for people to come together through shared meals, free events and welcoming spaces.

Everything they do is rooted in the belief that communities need places where people can belong, connect and support each other.

We are proud to have INFUSE as one of our founding cafes in the Canvas Cafe Collective.

What does a community cafe look like?

It depends.

Our eight founding cafes stretch from Coleraine to Cardiff, Bristol to Battersea, Honley to Southampton, Eastcote to East Grinstead.

Every one has found its own way to serve its community.

Some are places of refuge. Some are creative hubs. Some are woven into village life. Others offer practical support, connection or simply somewhere to belong.

United by one shared belief: that a cafe can be so much more than somewhere to grab a coffee.

Each cafe reflects its neighbourhood, its people and the passions of those who run it.

There isn’t one blueprint for a community cafe.

Community cafes become whatever their neighbourhood needs them to be.

Each one is a canvas for community life, shaped by the people and place around it.

Together, they’re showing what’s possible when hospitality becomes a way of strengthening community.

From tomorrow, we’ll be introducing each of our founding cafes and sharing the stories behind them. We can’t wait for you to meet them.

Each has found its own way to offer something extra that goes way beyond coffee.

Over the past four months, eight incredible cafes from across the UK have helped shape what this could become.

Different places.
Different people.
Different communities.

United by one shared belief: that a cafe can be SO much more than somewhere to grab a coffee.

These are places where friendships begin. Where people find a warm welcome, support and companionship. Where local ideas take root. Where communities become all the stronger.

Every single day, these neighbourhood cafes quietly make life a little better for the people around them.

Today, we’re proud to celebrate them as the founding cafes of The Canvas Cafe Collective.

Four years ago today, The Canvas closed its doors.

Today something new begins.

We are incredibly proud to launch The Canvas Cafe Collective - a growing network of incredible community cafes, united by the idea that a cafe can be so much more than somewhere to grab a coffee ☕️

In this short film, Ruth Rogers shares the story behind the new Collective.

This is just the beginning.

The Canvas is back. Just… not as cafe. 💛

For eight years, The Canvas in East London became something more than a place to get coffee. It became a place to connect, to share, to feel part of something.

When we lost it in 2022, one thing became clear: This wasn’t about one café. It was about what cafés can be.

So we’re starting something new.

The Canvas Network – unlocking the potential of community cafés across the UK.

We’re bringing together independent cafés who care about their communities, to explore what more might be possible, together.

This is just the beginning.
