Period products are used internally, repeatedly, and over decades - yet they are still not specifically regulated. 🩸

Wen, with Consultants in Obstetrics and Gynaecology - Dr Karen Joash and Dr Leila Frodsham and spokesperson for , are calling for proper regulation of period products in the UK.

There is growing evidence linking period products to exposure to toxic chemicals, including pesticides, heavy metals and PFAS. This is a public health issue.

With the Women’s Health Strategy under review, we need clinicians to stand with us. 🩸

What a day in Parliament! Yesterday, Wen took our campaign for toxic free period products right to the heart of government. We started at the House of Lords and ended at Defra, calling for regulation to make all period products safe.

Hosted by Baroness Natalie Bennett, we heard from an incredible line up of women – scientists, campaigners and health experts – who made it clear why the UK urgently needs action on toxic chemicals in period products.

“It’s a health crisis, not just a reproductive crisis, with these toxic chemicals affecting every single system in a woman’s body.” – Karen Joash
“We need constant pressure, independent research and funding.” – Susie Hewson
“We’ve got a window of opportunity with this government.” – Josie Cohen, PAN UK
“There is some will to act on the regulation of period products.” – Baroness Natalie Bennett

After the event, we took our placards and petition to Defra, now signed by more than 76,000 people.

The energy, passion and solidarity in the room, and on the streets, were electric. There was a shared commitment to keep collaborating and pushing forward until period products are safe for everyone.

On 5 November, we will be taking the petition to Downing Street to make sure this message reaches the very top. If you haven’t already, add your voice and help us keep up the momentum for safe, toxic free period products.

It’s a big day! Today, we’re in Parliament putting period product safety firmly on the government’s agenda.

Our event at the House of Lords, with Baroness Natalie Bennett, asks the question: Have we reached the tipping point for toxic period products?

With our expert panel including Susie Hewson MBE (Founder, Natracare), Dr Karen Joash (Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology), Kathrin Schilling (Assistant Professor), and Josie Cohen (Pesticide Action Network UK), chaired by Helen Lynn from Wen - we’ll explore the evidence and call for urgent regulation to make all period products safe.

We’re also delivering our petition to DEFRA, demanding regulation to keep people safe from toxic chemicals in period products. With well over 50,000 signatures we can’t be ignored.

For 35 years we’ve been building the evidence, bringing organisations together and pushing for political action. We’re now at a tipping point - with enough public pressure we can end toxic period products for good. This is the UK government’s chance to lead the world on period product safety and finally put the safety of women, girls and people who menstruate first.

We’ve reached a tipping point on toxic chemicals in period products - change can’t wait any longer.

For decades, Wen has warned that the products millions rely on each month may not be safe.

The evidence is now overwhelming - pesticides, heavy metals, and ‘forever chemicals’ are showing up in tampons, pads and period pants.

Yet the UK still has no specific regulation to protect women, girls and people who menstruate.🩸

We are at the tipping point.

Momentum is building. Our petition with partners and .movement already has 32,000+ signatures to get toxic chemicals out of period products.

For 35 years, we have led the fight for safe, sustainable and affordable period products. It’s encouraging that period product producers are speaking out too - showing how urgent the need for regulation has become. This month, during Environmenstrual Week of Action, we will hand the petition to Government. The more support we gather now, the stronger the case.

Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

Wen’s Shazna Hussain, a community researcher with our Food Lives programme in Tower Hamlets, reflects on what she has learned from listening to residents, shopkeepers, and stallholders about food, waste, and access.

From women balancing cooking on tight budgets, to local co-operatives helping families buy just the right amount of fresh produce without packaging - the research shows the creativity in communities when it comes to food.

Shazna shares what needs to change so that everyone can access affordable, healthy, culturally appropriate food, without waste.
