At SERCO’s Annual General Meeting, activists confronted shareholders and the Board with the testimonies and questions of people who have experienced SERCO’s squalid asylum accommodation and punitive immigration detention centres.

SERCO—a private company involved in training US Immigration and Customs Enforcement—is gobbling up public funds here in Britain to deliver a cruel and dehumanising anti-migrant agenda, from 24/7 GPS tagging described as ā€œtortureā€, to hazardous asylum accommodation, to prison-like immigration detention of people including survivors of human trafficking.

Please share this to help us spread the word: there’s no excuse for this cruelty. Public resources should be invested in our communities instead of lining the pockets of border profiteers like SERCO.

Migrant Health Care Assistants (HCAs) have worked tirelessly for many years at Countess of Chester Hospital (COCH)—but have been stranded since last summer’s immigration sponsorship threshold change left their annual pay just Ā£63 below the required salary for sponsorship to stay and work in the UK.

On April 1, the NHS pay rise lifted these workers’ salaries to now meet the Ā£25,000 threshold, and the NHS has publicly announced that band 3 HCAs are now eligible for sponsorship.

There is now no reason for the Trust not to protect these workers, who have given so much to COCH colleagues, patients, and their families. But inaction by the Trust has already resulted in some highly appraised staff leaving. For months, the Trust delayed finding any solution to protect the jobs of these workers. Some couldn’t risk enduring such uncertainty and were forced to find jobs elsewhere.

Earlier this month, migrant workers got organised and marched on a board meeting to get answers. In response to this action, the Trust offered applications for sponsorship for workers whose visa expiry date is due to run out in the next 3 months. This mirrors similar situations across Manchester, in trusts including the Manchester Foundation Trust and the Northern Care Alliance, where trust leaders also practice a policy of only sponsoring workers whose visas are three months from expiration.

However, those whose expiry date runs out after this short period remain in limbo, and COCH workers are calling for an end to this policy.

šŸ‘‰ On April 25 and 26, write to the Chief Executive Jane Tomkinson, Chief People Officer Vicki Wilson and the Chair Of The Board Neil Large to ask them to provide sponsorship to all those at risk of losing their jobs.

šŸ”„What a day! šŸ”„On Saturday, thousands of us took to the streets at the National Housing Demonstration - united against a housing system that is dividing communities.

The housing crisis affects everyone and the right solutions benefit us all.

🌟Rent controls to make housing affordable
🌟A massive programme of social housebuilding
🌟Safe, secure homes for everyone—no exceptions

Migrants didn’t cause the housing crisis. Decades of bad decisions from politicians, profiteering private developers and landlords did. Stop making distractions. Build social housing. Rent controls now.

Our members, many of whom are currently living in asylum accommodation or navigating homelessness after being granted status, showed powerful leadership on the day.

They showed up to the demonstration to make their voices heard and show solidarity with each and every person in the UK who is impacted by the housing crisis.

Everyone deserves a decent and affordable home.

Migrants, renters, workers, and families stood together, united. When we stand together, we see that our struggle is the same. Housing justice for all!

On 21 March, delegates at the TUC North-East, Yorkshire & the Humber Regional Conference in Durham voted unanimously to support Motion 16, proposed by the Bakers Union (BFAWU) and seconded by the Train Drivers Union (ASLEF). The motion calls for unions across the region to stand with migrants, defend communities targeted by the far right, and work closely with organisations like Migrants Organise to build a stronger, united movement.

The motion, which was part of a package on an Equal and Fair Society, recognises the work of Migrants Organise, affirming the importance of migrant-led organising in building a fair and inclusive society.

In simple terms: the trade union movement in the region has made it clear that standing with migrants is not optional — it’s essential.

Join Migrants Organise on April 8 for an online public rally ahead of the National Housing Demonstration on April 18! šŸ”„

Everyone deserves a decent home. People seeking asylum, migrants and refugees know this more than most. Unaffordable rents, long waiting lists and rising homelessness are the fault of decades of policy choices that benefit private developers and landlords—yet, politicians are blaming migrants and some of the very people who suffer the most from their decision.

We know the housing crisis affects everyone and the right solutions benefit everyone. And on 18th April, we'll be joining people from across the country at the National Housing Demonstration, taking to the streets of London to demand change.

šŸ‘‰ Ready to march alongside the Migrants Organise Housing Group? Join us for an online rally on Wednesday April 8 at 6:30 pm to plan for the action and learn how to get involved!

šŸ“£Last week, we joined hundreds of people - from grassroots groups to unions - to speak out against the government’s ā€œearned settlementā€ proposals.

These proposals are designed to make it harder for migrant communities to settle here. They will do nothing to strengthen communities or address structural issues of inequality and racism, and instead will further entrench deep poverty and deportation.

It’s estimated that

🚨1.35 million people already living and working in the UK could be plunged into protracted limbo because of these new rules

🚨300,000 children will be impacted- their lives destabilised.

We know there is huge resistance to these proposals- in parliament and on our streets- we won’t be silenced!

Solidarity to everyone affected and to everyone who is taking action. Together we will keep organising.

Special shout out to our friends who showed up with us, for leading on the day and to everyone involved in fighting these ā€œproposalsā€ at every step of the way.

The government's latest attack on our rights would give police new powers to effectively ban repeat protests.

MPs must call for this dangerous proposal—and the anti-protest laws it builds on—to be scrapped immediately.

Join us Tuesday to defend the right to protest:

This government wants us to believe that there aren't enough resources for everyone- that humanity and rights are scarce resources. But we won't be silenced.

Today, outside parliament we will make out voices heard against their cruel "earned" settlement plans.
