💜 Let’s break the stigma around domestic abuse. 💜
Stigma, judgement and misunderstanding can make it even harder for someone experiencing domestic abuse to speak out or ask for help.
❌ “Why don’t they just leave?”
❌ “It doesn’t happen to men.”
❌ “It’s not abuse if there are no physical injuries.”
❌ “They must have done something to deserve it.”

These misconceptions can cause real harm. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, occupation, income or background — and abuse is not always physical.
This Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, we want to help change the conversation. 💬💜
Instead of judgement, choose understanding.
Instead of blame, choose compassion.
Instead of silence, choose support. 🫶
At Future Living Hertford, we support survivors of domestic abuse to rebuild confidence, recover and move forward with their lives.
💜 Believe. Support. Empower. Create Change.

💜 October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month 💜

Domestic abuse is never just physical. It can take many different forms, and recognising the signs can be an important step towards getting support.

Abuse can include physical, emotional, psychological, financial, sexual and digital abuse, as well as coercive control, isolation and controlling someone’s choices or independence.

At Future Living Hertford, we support survivors of domestic abuse through specialist counselling, empowerment programmes and ongoing support, helping people understand their experiences, rebuild confidence and move forward with their lives. 🌱💜

No one should have to face domestic abuse alone. Abuse is never your fault, and support is available.

Little treasures, meaningful connections 💛✨

For our final parent and child connection workshop, families created personalised treasure boxes — a place to keep reminders of what helps them feel connected, supported and hopeful.

Together, they explored what matters to them and what they would like to keep building on in the future, taking home something special they can continue adding to together.

We’ll be running another parent and child connection programme in January! If you’re interested in getting creative with your child, building connection and taking some time out of your busy evenings together, email us at [email protected] 💛

💜 Domestic Abuse Awareness Month: Understanding, Educating and Empowering

Our latest blog is now live.

This Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, we’re looking at the realities of domestic abuse — including why leaving is rarely as simple as it may seem, the different forms abuse can take, and why challenging stigma and increasing understanding are so important.

At Future Living Hertford, our work is not only about supporting survivors; it’s also about education, empowerment and creating change.

From teaching children and young people about healthy relationships, to providing counselling and specialist programmes for female and male survivors, we want to help build a future where everyone can recognise healthy relationships and feel empowered to move forward.

Our blog also shares powerful reflections from survivors and the counsellors who support them, highlighting messages of hope, strength, resilience and possibility.

💜 Domestic Abuse Awareness Month 💜

This October, we’re helping to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions and reduce the stigma surrounding domestic abuse.

We asked our placement counsellors at Future Living:

💬 “What has working with survivors taught you about domestic abuse?”

Katie, one of our placement counsellors, shared:

“Working with survivors has taught me that domestic abuse has no ‘type’ — it can affect people from every area of society, and the reality is often far more complex and multifaceted than people may realise.

I’ve learned just how powerful and dangerous coercive control can be, and how much it can affect someone’s confidence, independence and sense of self. I’ve also learned that leaving is rarely as simple as it may seem from the outside. It can be one of the hardest and most dangerous times for a survivor, and sadly, leaving the relationship does not always mean the abuse or its impact ends there.

What has stayed with me most is the courage, strength and resilience of the survivors I have worked with. Not only in finding a way through the abuse, but in beginning to rebuild their lives afterwards — often while learning to trust themselves, their choices and their own voice again.”

💜 Domestic abuse has no “type”.
💜 Leaving isn’t always the end of the abuse.
💜 Recovery takes courage, time and support.

Throughout Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, we’ll continue sharing the voices and experiences of those who work alongside survivors as we challenge misconceptions and raise awareness.

🌳 Week 3 of our Parent & Child Creative Connection Workshops!
This week, parents and children painted trees to explore what shapes their connection. It was lovely to see each pair make the activity their own and spend time creating together. 🎨
We’ll be running another four-week workshop in January. If you’d like some time out to get creative with your child and build your connection, email [email protected] to register your interest. 💚

💜 October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month 💜
Domestic abuse doesn’t just affect adults. Children and young people can see it, hear it and feel its impact, which is why ensuring they have access to safe, supportive spaces is so important. 🫶
At Future Living Hertford, supporting children and young people is a key part of our work. 🌈
Through The Base, our children and young people’s therapy service, we provide a safe and welcoming environment where young people can explore their feelings, process difficult experiences and receive therapeutic support. 💛
We also deliver Young Hearts, our healthy relationships programme for primary schools. 🏫❤️ Young Hearts helps children learn about healthy relationships, boundaries, emotions and respect, giving them valuable tools and understanding from an early age.
This Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, we’re raising awareness not only of domestic abuse itself, but of the impact it can have on the youngest members of our communities.
💜 Every child deserves to feel safe, heard and supported.
