Happy World Environment Day 🌍
To celebrate , we’re shining a spotlight on Ophrys apifera - the stunning bee orchid 🐝🌸 Recently spotted at Le Noir Pré during our Orchid Field Open Day
✨ Bee orchids are a protected species in Jersey, making every sighting extra special.
Thanks to careful conservation, Le Noir Pré has become an important haven for orchids. Typically appearing in May, Orchids rely on a fascinating symbiotic relationship with microscopic soil fungi, which provides the orchids with nutrients and in return they gain sugars!
Our rangers, grazing partners and conservation team help them thrive by:
🌿 Grazing the field in winter to encourage fresh spring growth
🌾 Cutting for hay after flowering and seed dispersal
☀️ Prevent dominant species from taking over
🌸Monitoring orchid populations and habitat condition
How many did you spot this May? 👀
