Gingko is a UK-registered charity seeking to promote and facilitate dialogue between the Middle East and the Western world through conferences, events, publications and student retreats. It aims to enable and inform open discussion, giving a voice to a new generation of thinkers and opinion formers.

This year’s GIGNKO retreat was a tremendous success, bringing together Muslims, Christians and Jews from around the world to the island of Büyükada to discuss the theme ‘Hospitality as a Means to Deepen the Encounter’. This year we considered and practised hospitality, with each playing the roles of hosts, guests, pilgrims, teachers and students. Hospitality touches each of our lives, and the retreat showed us the profundity of its meaning, as a force of history and as the kindness of the individual.

The 2026 Hubert Walter Award, presented by Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullaly (centre) has been awarded to our CEO and founder, Dr Barbara Schwepcke (right), for her tireless work fostering interreligious dialogue through GINGKO’s fellowship and charitable publishing, building bridges between communities in times of conflict, crisis and division.

The award is a true honour, known in full as ‘The Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Inter-Faith Cooperation’; it is named for the 12th-century Archbishop of Canterbury, who, during the Crusades, led peaceful negotiations with Salah ad-Din, securing safe passage for pilgrims in the holy city of Jerusalem.
