As we approach the end of the academic year, we wanted to wish our AMI 3-6 Diploma students the best of luck with their exams and share the beautiful materials that they've created as part of the AMI 3-6 Diploma course. The materials are either hand-made or sourced from charity shops for every area of the Children's House curriculum and later presented to the examiner. When creating or sourcing the materials, students must ensure that they are:

1) Beautiful: materials must be beautiful to look at, because Maria Montessori observed that 3-6 year old children are very concerned with beauty and order.
2) Functional: Whether sourced or hand-made, students (future teachers) need to ensure that the materials do, in fact, work properly, that jugs pour effectively for example.
3) Child size: all materials must be child-sized and easy to be handled and used by little hands.

Join us for our free, in-person Montessori Parent Talk at the Maria Montessori School - Bayswater, at 6pm on Thursday 25th June.

This talk will explain and demonstrate through the use of Montessori materials, how children journey from tactile explorations and definitions of volume using unit cubes, to classifying and transforming diverse solids into equivalent rectangular forms. This culminates in them discovering the 3:1 relationship between prisms and pyramids through hands-on experiments with sand or water; turning sensorial discovery into mathematical understanding.

Our Montessori Parent Talks are educational presentations and discussions with our teachers covering various topics related to Montessori education and child development.

There will also be time for Q&A and an opportunity to share your experiences with other families.

Our Upper Elementary (9 to 12 years) children from both Bayswater and Hampstead recently went on their overnight trip to Cuffley, Hertfordshire. They learnt all sorts of outdoor survival skills - first aid in the wilderness, how to build shelter, cooking meals over an open fire, archery, camouflage activities and games, exploring an old World War 2 bomb crater, as well as enjoying beautiful hikes through the woods. There was a very harmonious and playful atmosphere and positive interactions between our children in both Hampstead and Bayswater.

The Upper Elementary children are offered the opportunity to participate in a variety of unique overnight outings over the course of the three-year Upper Elementary cycle. Some of the experiences offered have included the Bushcraft Company, Montessori Model United Nations, and PGL. These excursions provide the children with the chance to bond as a community in a different setting, to share wonderful memories with their peers and teachers, and to prepare for the extended trips that take place at the Adolescent (12 to 16 years) level.

One of the main points that underpin the Montessori method is that as human beings, no matter how old or young we are, from babies and toddlers, to elders; and no matter our level of ability or disability, we are always striving for independence and feel hindered when others do things for us that we could be doing ourselves.

This innovative course honours that basic human need for independence and will guide professionals and families of those experiencing challenges due to dementia, disability and ageing, on how to create an environment in which individuals can do as much for themselves as possible with meaningful roles, routines and activities tailored to the individual.

Held online and in the evening, this course is ideal for family members, carers, nurses, support workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, volunteers and more.

Children in The Maria Montessori School recently took part in a 21 day chick hatching experience where they witnessed how the chicks went from eggs to tiny chicks and took it in turns to hold them and pet them when they arrived!

Montessori education is about lived, real experiences like these, where children learn about animals and chicks in particular, in a concrete hands-on way.

This free of charge programme will provide parents and professionals with practical parenting strategies and advice on the home environment.

The young child is capable of independent activity right from the start. To nurture and to encourage this allows for the fullest expression of their potential – a true aid to life.

Knowing the how and the why will help us as parents and carers to recognise and so cultivate this natural tendency for independence from the very beginning. This will give us the tools to foster a truly collaborative relationship with the child in our care. Knowledge of child development will be covered as it will illuminate important considerations when we perform the daily activities, such as dressing, eating, toileting and sleeping; important rituals that given time, will grant us simple ways to adopt Montessori principles in the home.
