How well children understand numbers when they start school predicts how they do in maths years later, right through to secondary school. Yet children's maths tends to fall behind their reading in the early primary years, and many grow up convinced they are "just not a maths person".

So, the way young children first meet numbers really counts. Our Head of Training, Louise Livingston, has co-written a paper with researchers from the Centre for Educational Neuroscience at UCL that looks at exactly this. They compared how Montessori classrooms teach maths to 3- to 6-year-olds with what neuroscience now tells us about how the brain learns. The match was remarkably close.

Join us for this year's AMI Refresher course on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st November 2026 at the Maria Montessori Institute, our Training Centre in London. These courses are a great opportunity to refresh and revive your Montessori training and practice and to connect with fellow Montessorians.

In this AMI Refresher course, Dr Louise Livingston will draw on her many years of working with children, and her understanding of how the brain learns, to explore how to support children who learn differently from what we might expect.

The Maria Montessori School - Notting Hill received a special visitor last Friday! Former Notting Hill teacher, Miss Tsao, came over to celebrate the Chinese Mid Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival. On this day, it is believed that the moon is at its fullest and brightest, coinciding with the time of harvest in the middle of autumn.

Miss Tsao and the children read a book about the festival, sang a traditional song associated with the celebration, and the children had the opportunity to make their very own mooncakes. It was such a lovely and memorable way to celebrate together!
In the days leading up to the visit, the children also made some beautiful lanterns to celebrate the festival.

Montessori for Teenagers! If your child is approaching this age or if you work with or would like to work with, adolescents, the AMI 12-18 Orientation will give you a thorough introduction on how Montessori can be applied for this age group.

Discover the needs and characteristics of young people at this stage of development including concepts such as The Pivotal Role of Production and Exchange and the Importance of the Work of the Hand. The significance of being in nature and support for young people’s self-confidence and care of their physical health.

You will explore how an adult can best support optimal development for this age group in any environment and as needed, to identify and remove obstacles to optimal development. The course also covers how to work with the Montessori teacher in the adolescent programme.

This is just a glimpse of the topics you will be covering on this course.

Students on this course will receive an AMI Orientation Certificate for 12-18 year olds upon passing the course and provided that they have had at least 90% attendance on the course. It is studied online, a few evenings per week and only has a 3 week duration, so it's ideal for those wanting to study it alongside work, childcare or further study.
