More than 80 leading figures and organisations in the fields of biology, primatology, ethology, conservation and animal advocacy are calling on Associated Press to update their style guide around the pronouns used when writing about animals. This update would reflect the scientific truth about animals - that each animal is a sentient individual, not an “it”. The mindset of seeing animals as things, resources, or commodities has shaped a destructive relationship to nature and other species that has played a role in creating an ecological crisis that now threatens us all. Changing the way we refer to animals is a small step toward an outlook that is more grounded in both reason and empathy.
