Marking 81 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki at Coventry Cathedral this Thursday.

Sophie Bolt (CND General Secretary) will be giving the reflection, alongside Taiko drumming, messages of greeting exchanged with Hiroshima, and a paper crane workshop.

Our friends at Quakers in Britain and Rethinking Security have launched a vital open letter calling on the Prime Minister to halt the spiralling rise in military spending. True security isn't achieved through nuclear weapons or vast arsenals, but through international cooperation, peacebuilding, and investing in our communities. The Government has announced a £15 billion defence spending boost to 'keep the UK safe' (read the full announcement here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/15-billion-new-funding-boost-to-transform-armed-forces-and-keep-the-uk-safe). Here is our response:

Christian CND doesn't agree that spending £15 billion will 'keep the UK safe'. We believe it would be far more effective and less costly to increase diplomacy and build peace with our global neighbours, including increasing funding for international development. Instead of preparing for the wars of the future, we should be working to avoid wars in the future. We do not need to strengthen our nuclear 'deterrent' but to work towards getting rid of it, as it only fuels the arms race, making war more likely. None of this will help us to tackle the climate emergency - but it will exacerbate it. As for economic growth, investment in other sectors is far more effective, leading to far more jobs (see https://cnduk.org/military-spending-kills-jobs-people/).

Jesus said, 'Blessed are the peacemakers', not the warmongers, and we need to trust him and his words. To spend £15 billion more on 'defence' is an obscene misuse of God-given resources.

Following the news of Sir Keir Starmer stepping down, the Labour Party and our current government are entering a significant period of transition. As Christians, we are called to pray for those in authority and those seeking leadership, that they may be guided by wisdom, justice, and a commitment to true peace.

With Andy Burnham returning to Parliament and emerging as the leading candidate to succeed Starmer, we are praying intentionally for the future leader of the Labour Party and the incoming administration. We pray that their eyes will be opened to the devastating reality of nuclear weapons, and that they will have the courage to steer the UK towards a new path - one that rejects the false security of mass destruction and instead embraces the pursuit of global nuclear disarmament.

Join us in praying for the future leader, the wider government, and all our political leaders during this immense time of change. May they seek to be peacemakers on the world stage.

Our peace sculpture, 'Hope Will Blossom From These Ashes', is on display right now at Manchester Cathedral. Commissioned by Christian CND, it features hundreds of vibrant origami cranes folded by our volunteers, blooming like flowers out of a charred tree trunk to symbolise prayers for a nuclear - free world.

If you are in the area, it is completely free to view and well worth a visit before it leaves on 16 June.
