WOMA WOMA is a charitable trust with a clear focus, made up of a small team experienced in working in Africa.

Our aim is to help women across Africa who have been widowed or disadvantaged through war, famine or Aids. We give small educational grants to individual women in order to help them gain skills that will help them support themselves and their families, lifting them out of poverty and giving them a real chance to fend for themselves.

On International Women’s Day we would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the past 21 years. Through our training programmes we have been empowering women in Africa disadvantaged through HIV/AIDs by helping them to support themselves and their families.

So proud to be sharing this post. Our dear friend is launching her first solo album in Camden this weekend. Hugely talented Eve and her creative circle are wonderful ambassadors for cross cultural music, and in particular for Greek Greek/Cypriot inspired tones fused with other musical genres. Eve had supported our little WOMA - - since it began back in 2005 and performed with her musical partner at many of our gigs. Sunday will be an extraordinary life affirming gathering showcasing Wonderful talent so please spread the word. Debs would be so proud of you Evie !! Some of you will recall Eve from Donna & Kebab days !

15 women sponsored by WOMA this year are coming to the end of the their six month training programme at Namasuba College of Commerce. After successfully completing the course the women are able to sit practical and theory exams which will give them a recognised vocational qualification from the Directorate of Industrial Training in Uganda. The students will have to wait until March for the results, but we wish them every success as they start to set up their own businesses.

We are thrilled to announce that our hot-desking initiative the WOMA SEWING SPACE is now up and running in Kampala. Using sate of the art machines, wifi for digital marketing and additional business support, the aim is to upskill the WOMA fashion entrepreneurs we trained and give them a base from where they can operate. Its open daily and opperates on a modest paid for membership basis. Already the orders are coming in.....

Maximum respect to:-
College of Commerce

And all the WOMA trained women who are looking to grow their businesses.

WOMA wil commission occasional branded products like our amazingly stylish modern cushion covers to mark our 20th anniversary, but the WOMA Sewing Space members will generate their own business and client base using the hot-desking facility as their workshop and base.

Up until now WOMA co founders Nora Dennehy and Karen Allen have suppoted the WOMA Sewing Space out of their own funds but we urgently need investors to support this separate not for profit initiative and keep it live.

Our charity function at WOMA - ie to train women to become fashion entrepreneurs - still continues as part of the charity's core work, with the next intake of recruits about to start soon.

Frances Dennehy and her husband James Taghdissian are once more getting into the saddle to cycle the 100k around the Isle of Wight for WOMA. They are carrying on a tradition started by Peter Brook 20 years ago. This year they are joined by friends Ffion, Matt and Nick. It’s a long way and the island is full of hills so it would help them on their way to know they’re raising lots of money for WOMA. To sponsor them follow the link below. Our help is needed more than ever as governments are cutting their aid budgets.

Seven of our latest trainees at Namasuba College. Having completed their training they plan to return home to Eastern Uganda and set up in business together. They would also like to pass on the skills they've learned to other vulnerable young women in their villages.

Patrica Kamega and Patricia Akware have just finished six months training in fashion and design at Namasuba College of Commerce. They both live in a rural area near to Jinja in Eastern Uganda and after being offered a place on the course by WOMA they left their homes to come to Kampala to take part in the training programme.

They both had to leave school early due to lack of money to pay for fees and were living with elderly relatives as their parents had died. They had no job and no prospects. Now they have acquired practical skills and also learned how to set up their own business and both women told us how they were full of confidence in their abilities and were eager to return to their villages to set up a workshop with their fellow students.

After a year of planning our WOMA Sewing Space is finally ready. The launch last week was attended by officials from the US Embassy, local politicians and union leaders and representatives from other NGO's as well as generating a lot of interest from the general public. Our latest trainees were showcasing their products including a range of cushions commissioned by WOMA. We now need to find some sponsors to get it up and running.
