This week is Childrenâs Mental Health Week.
And if thereâs one message we wish more adults could hold in mind â especially those of us balancing work, family life, nursery drop-offs, school runs, and everything in between â itâs this:
Children donât always show us what theyâre feeling.
They show us what theyâre coping with.
Sometimes what looks like:
âattention seekingâ
âdefianceâ
âlazinessâ
âmeltdownsâ
âshutting downâ
âbeing difficultâ
âŚis actually a childâs nervous system saying:
âI donât feel safe.â
âI donât know how to explain.â
âIâm trying so hard.â
And the truth is â many parents feel caught too.
Some feel relieved to be back at work.
Some feel guilty.
Some feel torn in half.
Some feel like theyâre failing even when theyâre giving everything.
So this isnât a post about blame.
Itâs a post about something simpler â and more hopeful:
Please listen to whatâs underneath.
Because children donât need perfect adults.
They need present adults.
At the Lifestyle Health Foundation, we believe a childâs behaviour is often the surface of something deeper â and that the most powerful support is not always a techniqueâŚ
âŚbut a moment of being heard.
đ If youâre a parent, teacher, clinician, or simply someone who cares about children:
What might change if we got curious about whatâs underneath â before we tried to correct whatâs on the surface?
