Happy Birthday to Hanna Segal (August 20, 1918, Łódź, Poland – July 5, 2011, London, England)!

A gifted psychoanalyst, teacher, and writer, Hanna Segal was one of the most influential voices of the Kleinian tradition. Her work offered profound insights into unconscious phantasy, symbol formation, psychosis, creativity, and the struggle between life and destruction.

The economy of love- On this day August 18 in 1882

Freud wrote the following to Martha Bernays:
"One should not be stingy with tenderness (figuratively, with love); whatever is drawn from those funds is renewed through that very expenditure. If those reserves are left untouched for a long time, they diminish imperceptibly, or the lock rusts, and then one has them there but cannot make use of them."

More than thirty years later, Freud would describe, in theoretical terms, what he had once confessed to his beloved in poetic, metaphorical, and deeply loving language. What appears here as an intimate reflection on tenderness would later find its place within the metapsychological framework of the Introduction of Narcissism and the theory of the libido.

His work, deeply influenced by Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion, opened new ways of thinking about the inner world:
