“On first glance, we judge people. Theatre gives us time to see beyond the surface.”

Dash Arts’ Artistic Director Josephine Burton has been interviewed by Byline Times Editor-in-Chief Hardeep Matharu about Our Public House, the conversations that shaped it, and why theatre can hold complexity in ways that politics so often cannot.

The interview explores everything from political alienation and community to Englishness, belonging and the importance of spaces where people can still come together and talk.

It also features two of the real-life speech-makers who have taken to the stage as part of Our Public House, sharing their own reflections on identity, masculinity, community and the future.

Out now! Lynne Murphy on OffScript

"English as a language is not a place, it's people."

In the latest episode of Dash Arts' podcast OffScript, Artistic Director Josephine Burton is joined by linguist Lynne Murphy: ie Lynneguist, for a fascinating conversation about the language we think we own.

Together they explore how English was shaped by invasion, migration, class and empire - and why its ability to absorb new words, new voices and new speakers is precisely what keeps it alive.

If English belongs to everyone who speaks it, what does that mean for Englishness?

It's a question that sits at the heart of Albion and Our Public House - our new touring production built from conversations with more than 700 people across England.

Over the past few months, Albion - the special mini-series within Dash Arts’ podcast OffScript - has become a space for conversations about identity, history, belonging and what England means today.

Through Albion, Dash Arts’ Artistic Director Josephine Burton has spoken with artists, writers, musicians, journalists and thinkers including Billy Bragg, Caroline Lucas, Jeremy Deller, Hardeep Matharu, Shobana Jeyasingh and Paula Akpan - each bringing a completely different perspective to the same urgent question: who gets to feel at home in England?

Together, these conversations have explored protest and folk music, migration and empire, language and community, nationalism and memory. They’ve challenged fixed ideas of Englishness and opened up space for something more layered, contradictory and alive.

These ideas continue in Our Public House, now touring England - a play built from voices gathered across the country, where debate, music and community take centre stage.
