His Holiness the Dalai Lama has written to Andy Burnham to congratulate him on his assumption of the office of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

โ€œToday, the world is passing through a very difficult and uncertain time,โ€ he wrote. โ€œHistorically, your country has played a leadership role in international affairs, and it is my hope that even as you work for the development of your own nation, you will also work closely with other countries to resolve the problems before us โ€” both urgent and long-term โ€” with a firm belief in the oneness of humanity and a shared desire for peace and happiness.

โ€œAs you may be aware, we Tibetans have long enjoyed a historic and unique relationship with your country. During my several visits there, I have deeply appreciated the warmth extended to me by people from all walks of life, as well as their support for my efforts to promote human values, nonviolence, and interfaith harmony.โ€

His Holiness concluded, โ€œI wish you every success in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in fulfilling the needs and aspirations of the British people, and in contributing to the creation of a more peaceful and compassionate world for us all.

Excerpt from the Time magazineโ€™s article:
โ€œIt is total shamelessness... It's ludicrous because on the one hand they're trying to destroy everything that resembles Buddhist practice; on the other they want to choose the reincarnation.โ€
Geshe Lhakdor, director of Library of Tibetan Works & Archives

As the Dalai Lama ages, the battle over his succession has already begun, with the officially atheist Chinese Communist Party preparing to assert control over the spiritual world.

Beijingโ€™s view is clear: when His Holiness dies, his reincarnation must be โ€œapproved by the central government,โ€ Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning reiterated last July.

The upshot: soon there will likely be two Dalai Lamas, one sanctioned by the CCP and another by the Office of His Holiness. China insists a state-sanctioned shortlist of Chinese candidates will be placed inside a golden urn gifted to Tibet by the Qing Dynasty court, with the single name then withdrawn as the true reincarnation.

โ€œIt is total shamelessness,โ€ says Geshe Lhakdor, a Tibetan Buddhist scholar who for many years served as His Holinessโ€™s personal translator. โ€œItโ€™s ludicrous because on the one hand theyโ€™re trying to destroy everything that resembles Buddhist practice; on the other they want to choose the reincarnation.โ€

Beijing denies human-rights violations in Tibet, but advocacy groups and U.N. monitors paint a grim picture of a land systematically surveilled and repressed. For the over 140,000 Tibetans in exile, the fear is that the Dalai Lamaโ€™s passing could deal a major blow to hopes of Tibetan self-rule.

This spiritual succession is not merely a religious event, but a critical flash point amid a struggle for influence over a faith practiced by almost 500 million people.

While the Dalai Lama has served as an outspoken advocate for democracy and human rights, that moral authority may now be co-opted by an authoritarian superpower.

THANK YOU MESSAGE

I would like to thank you all for your greetings on my 91st birthday. As I mentioned to those gathered here in Leh, Ladakh, India on 6 July, when I look back on my life, I see that the core of my practice has been to be of benefit to others. That is the altruistic motivation with which I wake up every day.

Spreading compassion and kindness continues to be my life's primary mission. Such an attitude is essential to making our world a better place for everyone. I therefore call on my brothers and sisters everywhere, both young and old, to practice warm-heartedness and compassion, with genuine concern for the well-being of others. To be able to do so is, I believe, what it means to lead a meaningful and purposeful life of service.

As you may be aware, following a successful medical procedure on my left knee in New Delhi last month, I have since been recuperating here in Ladakh. As in past years, I find the climate here at this time of year well suited to my health, and I therefore plan to remain in Ladakh for the next several weeks.

With my prayers and good wishes,

DALAI LAMA
