We have extended the deadline for Digital Engagement Volunteer submissions until 30 June.

We are hosting a hybrid in-person/online IIC Congress this September, and as with past congresses, we will need extra hands to support our digital and in-person engagement activities and session moderating.

In exchange for your help, we are happy to offer a year of FREE IIC MEMBERSHIP, which comes with the benefit of FREE ONLINE ACCESS and discounted in-person registration fees for Congress and other IIC events, as well as a variety of resources to support your career and professional development (if you are already a member, IIC will extend your membership for the following year).

Volunteering at the IIC Congress is a great way to widen your professional network, gain skills working behind the scenes of a conference, and grow your confidence writing for a professional audience.

Our previous volunteers have said:
"Had such a wonderful and informative time; it was truly an honour to be part of it,"
and
"All of us have told you several times over, it was a fantastic experience and all of us truly bonded during our time there."

Spaces are limited for those wishing to contribute some volunteer hours during the Congress this year, and preference will be given to those attending in person.

“The Palestinian Archive Platform reflects a broader shift in conservation practice toward decentralised and community-engaged models. In the Palestinian context, such approaches can also be understood within decolonial archival practices that challenge authority over knowledge production and narrative formation. By enabling individuals to act as contributors rather than passive subjects, the project redefines the relationship between archives and their users.”

As the horrors of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continued and the realities of displacement became more prolonged, the need grew for conservators to find work, continue their professional development, and feel part of the wider conservation community. As Katya Belaia-Selzer gathered Ukrainian conservators, it became apparent that the lack of a reliable dictionary of conservation terminology was a barrier to successful collaboration.

Today, we are sharing a preview from research that will be presented at IIC's 2026 Congress in Ghent on September 8-11.

Meiping Wu, the author of 'Balancing Local Tradition and International Standards in Restoration. Achieving Minimum Intervention through Traditional Craftsmanship - A Case Study of the Yunnan-Guizhou Guild Hall,' shares this quote:

"Bringing a 120-year-old Chinese wooden guild hall back to life – without blueprints or boring scientific surveys. In 2024, restoration began on a once-abandoned traditional building, Yun-Gui Guild Hall in Tianjin, China, using only the instincts of a master craftsman (trained the traditional apprentice way) and an architect’s design eye. No official ‘heritage’ status. No pre-research. Just dialogue, tradition, and hands-on techniques like Dǎ Jiàn Bō Zhèng(打牮拨正)to straighten leaning timber frames, etc. This isn’t just a repair – it’s a quiet revolution. A chance to ask: what happens when ancient craft wisdom meets global conservation ideals like authenticity and minimal intervention?"

Meiping Wu is an associate professor at Tianjin University and holds a PhD in Architectural Heritage Conservation. She is a pioneer researcher in preventive conservation of built heritage and serves as secretary of CACTCH’s Professional Committee on Preventive Conservation of Architectural Heritage. She contributed to the Guanyin Hall Teahouse Conservation Project, which won the 2024 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. She has published three books and nearly 50 papers.

There are just 5 days left to apply or nominate others for IIC's 2026 Keck Award.

Communicating to the public everything that is involved in the art and science of conservation has always been a skill in itself. We believe that promoting public understanding, storytelling, and appreciation of conservation are becoming increasingly important ways to recognise, inspire, and contextualise the work of our profession. Projects that reach diverse and underrepresented audiences and regions are particularly welcomed, as well as initiatives that increase social impact and inspire creative engagement.

The award is a certificate of recognition and a prize of £2500, which will be presented online at the next biennial IIC Ghent Congress 2026 on 8-11 September 2026.

“Just south of Dublin is Dun Laoghaire (that’s pronounced “Dunn LEER-y”, for those unfamiliar), an affluent and well-kept harbour town surrounding a standard-issue shopping centre. However, those who venture around the back of the shopping centre (behind the Starbucks) will find the most unique and beautiful hidden gem of a site I’ve encountered in Ireland: the painted Oratory of the Sacred Heart.”
