In our latest episode of Loc’d Ones, we talk to the effervescent Isabelle Le Blanc, former Globalization Partner Manager at Netflix. Isabelle spills the tea on what it’s like working for one of the biggest streaming platforms, how she united and empowered women in the workplace, what producers think about issues like AI and authors' rights, and how being endlessly curious about others has got her into some interesting situations…

AudioVisual Translators Europe has released a manifesto on the negative impact of "first come, first served" automated job assignment systems, commonly known as shark tanks, on translation quality, income, work-life balance and mental health.

The manifesto was written by our chair, Max Deryagin, in consultation with several of our members. We propose a new approach based on an Equitable Task Assignment System, EquiTASS, which combines automation and a fairer process for selecting the most suitable linguist for a task.

You can read the manifesto here:

Written by Max Deryagin in consultation with Susana Loureiro, Adriana Tortoriello, Rachel Jones, Miroslav Pošta and Iris C. Permuy.

It’s time for another !

“Subtitle silence if plot-pertinent” instruct some SDH style guides, but sometimes it’s a bit more complicated than that. In a movie like “A Quiet Place” (2018) about surviving in a world inhabited by blind creatures with an acute sense of hearing, silence can mean various things: shock, suspense or concealment, but it’s also a baseline of daily life. So the question is: how should the SDH strategy change depending on the type of silence? Using [silence] all the time would hardly work.

For example, how do you subtitle “the sound of someone trying not to make a sound”? In the opening supermarket sequence, a family communicates entirely in sign language. There’s no music, and the ambient sound is minimal. Every tiny movement is controlled. Almost nothing is heard, but everything depends on it.

How would you handle this scene for SDH? Let us know! The link to the video is in the comments.
