We understand it can be very hard to , especially when you’re just starting out. Maybe you struggle with what to say when negotiating or you’re scared your client will simply go for another, cheaper linguist if you ask for more.

That’s why it’s so important that we are able to recognise our value and push back together. What we accept now will have an impact on the rates we all get in the future.

If you need some help with negotiating, here are some resources to help!

1. Watch the webinar “How much are you worth? Negotiation tactics, financial literacy and best practices” by Ekaterina Pliassova and Tina Shortland – available on our website for all members!

2. Join our next online meetup on Wednesday 29 July on applications and marketing materials like CVs, email templates, rates lists, websites, LinkedIn and social media profiles. Come, share advice and get feedback!

3. Don’t forget our rates calculator on our website! We all have different financial situations, but no one can survive on rates that are under minimum wage. Aim high by calculating what you need to charge to earn a living that reflects your expertise and qualifications. But it can also be helpful to calculate the absolute lowest rate you can accept to meet your essential needs. Then you will know when to give a hard no!

4. Ask around! You can always lean on colleagues in our Discord channel for advice, tips, discussions and support when you join Subtle.

Remember, if you don't ask, you don't get!

In light of recent changes to subtitling workflows, many linguists are onboarding with new agency clients who are offering unsustainable per-minute rates.

We want to remind everyone how detrimental it is to the industry to accept these low rates. We encourage everyone to negotiate and aim higher than the previous rates you have worked with, taking into account inflation and the cost of living, etc.

Remember you can calculate the rate you need to charge to make a decent living using Subtle’s calculator (link below).

Please think about the proficiency, dedication and attention to detail our craft entails before quoting for any subtitling jobs and do not hesitate to contact us at Subtle for advice.

Together we can resist in these challenging times.

It's time for another !

This time, we chose some of the famous tongue twisters from “BoJack Horseman”, which combine alliteration, rhyme and rapid-fire wordplay, making them a particularly challenging subtitling puzzle:

• You probably recall when she soared as the thorny horticulturist in One Sordid Fortnight With the Short-Skirted Sorceress.
• How would you enjoy joining Portnoy for a scorched-soy porterhouse pork four-courser at Koi?
• Glorify your source, but don't make it feel forced, of course, and try the borscht. Smooches!

How would you render them in your language? Let us know! The link to the video is in the comments.

At the end of June, our chair Max Deryagin and committee members Bill Skopelitis and Adriana Tortoriello headed to Warsaw for a conference organised by the Polish collective management organisation ZAiKS and their national AVT association STAW. Presentations talked about the impact and shortcomings of AI, brand protection and legal developments in authors' rights.

Our delegates then joined 24 other European AVT associations at the annual AVTE General Assembly where they discussed:

- recent developments in the industry

- the impact and use of AI by AVT stakeholders

- illegal LSP contracts

- cooperation with sister organisations for authors, musicians, film professionals, etc.

- authors' rights in the age of AI

- defending our working conditions at the European level

The meeting also focused on the recent changes to the Netflix localisation programme. To try and steer it in a better direction, a concrete action plan has been put in place. We'll be sure to keep you updated on developments as they occur.

Thank you to STAW for being such brilliant hosts!
