World Jewish Relief

World Jewish Relief The Jewish community’s first response to global crisis.

• We create opportunities for those out of work or living with disability to become self-reliant.
• We meet the physical and emotional needs of older people
• We respond to the immediate and longer term recovery needs of those affected by catastrophic disasters worldwide. (These should link through to relevant areas within ‘what we do’)

We do all of this as an expression of the Jewish ethos to:

“Anticipate charity by preventing poverty” (Maimonides). Over the next five years, we aim to:
• Take 100,000 people, the majority from within Jewish communities, out of poverty by helping them to help themselves.
• Support 50,000 older Jews to live dignified lives.
• Assist those affected by disaster by strengthening our role as the British Jewish community’s response to international emergencies

Our core commitments:

- Jewish Values: We are committed to applying Jewish values to all that we do.

- Courage: We are committed to taking bold actions to reduce poverty and ensure better futures for those we support.

- Partnership: We are committed to building partnerships that create a long-term, sustainable legacy, particularly within the communities within which we work.

- Expertise: We are committed to developing sector-leading expertise in every area of our organisation.

People in Ukraine continue to face escalating strikes, with needs rising rapidly across the country. Two nights ago, Ukrainians saw over 600 drones and dozens of missiles striking towns and cities across the country.

Today, we’re holding an online briefing from one of our partners on the ground in Ukraine, who will provide a first-hand assessment of the current situation, along with how we can provide a lifeline to those in need. If you can, please do join us.

Last night, families across Ukraine once again woke to air raid sirens, explosions and damage to homes and communities.

For millions of people, this uncertainty remains part of daily life.

One of World Jewish Relief’s staff members, Liubov Rainchuk, has been visiting our partners in Ukraine. She reflected:

“Last night’s attack was particularly intense. It was incredibly loud, frightening, and there was no way of knowing how it would end. You choose the safest place in your flat and wait, but there are no guarantees."

As attacks continue and needs grow, World Jewish Relief is there helping families restore a sense of safety and stability. With your support, we can continue helping people repair their homes and begin rebuilding their lives. Head to the article below to find out more.

Recent Russian attacks on Ukraine have left many within and beyond the Jewish community reeling. World Jewish Relief is providing support.

“Since the age of twelve, I’ve felt a deep desire to help Holocaust survivors and their families in some meaningful way. Volunteering with the WJR archive team has given me that opportunity.”

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible archive volunteers who help preserve thousands of photographs, handwritten letters and historic documents held within our archives.

Sharone, one of our volunteers explains: “Each time I uncover a name or trace a family’s journey, it feels like I’m helping someone reclaim their history.”

Through their work, our volunteers help preserve the legacy of those supported by World Jewish Relief and our historic rescue programmes. Thank you to Sharon, Sharone, Michelle, Sarah, Alex, Tanya and Katherine, whose care and dedication help families reconnect with their histories and ensure these stories are never forgotten.

After a recent Russian strike shattered the windows of Ryta's flat, Ryta and her family were left exposed to the elements, with extensive damage to the home they'd built over decades.

Living with dementia, the upheaval of leaving her home became overwhelming. Her daughter Natalia said the stress of the attack intensified her condition, and the family had no choice but to bring her back to the damaged flat despite the cold spring temperatures.

Through our repairs programme, in Ukraine, delivered with our local partner Всеукраїнський благодійний фонд "Заради тебе" we are helping vulnerable older people restore safety, warmth and dignity to their homes after attacks like these.

Because no one should have to live through this alone. To donate, head to the link below.
