Quaker Socialists

Quaker Socialists Quaker Socialists have been a group within British Quakers since they were founded in 1898 by Mary O'Brien. Their socialism is ethical, green and non-party.

They are best known for the Salter Lecture which they organise every year. We hope that members and sympathisers of the Quaker Socialist Society will use this page to exchange views and arrrange events, thus increasing the level of involvement of those who are unable to be part of the planning group.

Every year the Quaker Socialist Society (QSS) organises the Salter Lecture. Last Sunday the 2026 lecture was delivered at Friends House in London, by author Rachel Shabi, on the topic of 'The Middle East: A Moral Catastrophe?' If you click on https://quakersocialists.org.uk, you can find the video of her brilliant lecture, and the full text. [Update 13 May: Although the differences are very small, the text on the website is now Rachel's own text, as delivered on 03 May, not a transcription.]

Sometimes when a few Friends sit in worship in our local meeting we overlook the international work undertaken by Quakers, the greater picture. Here in this report is a summary of the work being undertaken and a glimpse at the potential of Quakers in our war torn world.

Our semiannual column highlights the recent works of Quaker organizations.

The basics

Our planet is seriously ill and we can feel the pain. We have been reminded of the many ways in which the future health of the earth is under threat as a result of our selfishness, ignorance and greed. Our earth needs attention, respect, love, care and prayer.

In comfortable Britain we are largely insulated from the effects of the environmental crisis. It is the poor of the world who suffer first.

As a Religious Society of Friends we see the stewardship of God’s creation as a major concern. The environmental crisis is at root a spiritual and religious crisis; we are called to look again at the real purpose of being on this earth, which is to till it and keep it so as to reveal the glory of God for generations to come.

It is a stony road ahead but our faith will uphold us; the power to act is God’s power which is mediated through each of us as we give and receive support one from another. We can all listen if we will to the sounds of the earth, tuning into it with joy.

Isn’t it time to show that Militarism isn’t part of a ‘natural order’ and needs changing? I would suggest it’s in our brief as Quaker Socialists to call for an end to the arms race and speak peace. As Quakers can we demonstrate, that the ‘seeds of war’ don’t start with us and to speak truth to those who advocate military power. Time to speak more clearly!

GEORGE ROBERTSON has said the quiet part out loud. Normally Labour’s pimps for the military-industrial complex, from Paul Mason to John Healey, like to pretend that a burgeoning arms bill need not mean any suffering for British working people.

This is a moment of extreme danger for civilians in Iran and the wider region.

For President Trump to threaten that 'a whole civilisation will die tonight' echoes genocidal language.

The UK government must urgently end military support to the US that could enable crimes under international law, including war crimes.

Amnesty International is unequivocal: threatening to systematically destroy civilian infrastructure is a threat to commit war crimes.

Attacking power plants essential to the survival of tens of millions of civilians would be unlawful.

The UK must act now.
