School Food Matters Due to our extensive work with London schools, SFM also participates in several regional and national policy steering groups dealing with school food issues.

Our mission is to teach children about food and to improve children’s access to healthy, sustainable food during their time at school. We share similar goals to excellent organisations such as Sustain, Food for Life Partnership and the Children's Food Trust and we frequently partner with them on local campaigni

We are hiring! As a Project Officer, you will help us to deliver our Nourish programme, supporting schools to create a food environment that puts young people's nutrition first.

Nourish is an evidence-based, multi-component programme, which helps schools to develop action plans and policies to cover the food served across the whole school day. Nourish uses a collaborative whole school approach to food involving everyone across the school community to create lasting positive change.

This summer, through our Know Your Onions, Schools to Market and Young Marketeers projects, children and young people from across England sold produce they had grown themselves. Potatoes still covered in soil, bright bunches of herbs, colourful salad leaves, tomato plants, rhubarb and redcurrants were all on sale, alongside homemade jams, chutneys, and even duck eggs!

The impact of those experiences was clear to see. One child proudly said: "Now I've learnt how to speak to people in public!". Another seized every opportunity to boost sales, telling one customer: "It's £2... but it is for charity so you can always pay more!". At another market, excitement reached fever pitch as one group of children shouted: "WE'VE SOLD OUT!!" while, in Sheffield, another beamed: "I just can't stop smiling."

This year, we welcomed 13 MPs to see the impact of food education firsthand, and understand the importance of ensuring that every child has access to nutritious food and has the skills to cook it.

We know that children in schools with strong food education are twice as likely to eat five a day, and are far more likely to make healthy choices both at school and at home. If we want to support this generation to be the healthiest ever, we must make sure that every child and young person has the practical skills and knowledge to nourish themselves for life.

A huge thank you to all the councillors, public health leads and funders who visited our markets and programmes, and supported the children and young people involved.

Our summer market season concludes with a fantastic celebration at Moor Market, Sheffield! 🍓

Young Marketeers have spent months learning about food production, growing vegetables, reducing food waste and engaging with their local communities. All money raised will support local charities Sheffield Food Chain and Open Kitchen. 🥦

From the first seed planted to the final sale made, these children have shown incredible dedication, creativity and teamwork.

Congratulations to all our Young Marketeers who took part across the country this summer, you've been amazing! 👏

Three cities: unbelievable amounts of school-grown veg! 🥦

Today our Young Marketeers sold their produce at Kirkgate Market in Leeds, Market Street in Manchester, and Grainger Market in Newcastle. 🌽

“We’ve learnt how to grown onions, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, strawberries and lavender. It took us ages to take out all the potatoes and it made us so dirty!” - year 4 child

All money raisied will go to Incredible Edible Leeds, FareShare Greater Manchester, and FareShare Northeast

Young people taking part in our Know Your Onions programme took their produce to markets across London today! Students sold their wares at Chapel Market in Islington, Inverness Street Market in Camden, Ridley Road Market in Hackney and Whitechapel Market in Tower Hamlets putting their growing, cooking and marketing skills into action.🥬

It’s great to see the students selling alongside the permanent vendors at these heritage London markets and showing off their fabulous produce. Congratulations to every young seller who took part!

A fantastic day for our Young Marketeers at Darley Street Market in Bradford, and The Bullring Market in Birmingham! 🍓

The children have spent months growing produce, learning about food systems and preparing for this moment. Seeing them engage confidently with customers and sell their harvests is always inspiring. Every market sale helps support food redistribution charities while teaching the next generation about the importance of community action.

It was fantastic to be in such a buzz in both cities. 🍏 The Bradford Literature Festival was in full swing, and the Bullring Market always has something going on! Well done to all involved!

All money raised will go to Bradford Metropolitan Food Bank and FareShare Midlands.

Were you in a Whole Foods store today? 🍏 If so, you might have seen children running their Schools to Market stalls in stores across London! They sold homemade chutneys and jams in Camden, Clapham, Kensington, the King's Road, Piccadilly and Stoke Newington.

From visiting the farm to pick their produce, to serving customers, the children have gained practical knowledge and developed confidence, creativity and entrepreneurial skills.

Thank you to everyone who supported them today. The money raised will go back into future food education activities. 🥕
