The Latin Programme-Via Facilis The Latin Programme – Via Facilis is a registered charity working in inner-city schools to improve En After age 16, the drop out rate is around 25%.

In the UK, the rate of childhood illiteracy is 20%, with one in five 11 year olds leaving primary education unable to read. The Latin Programme is passionate about reversing this trend. Learning Latin is known to improve the understanding of the structure of language and encourage logical thinking, although traditionally this subject has only been available to the lucky few. We believe Latin is fo

r everyone. Working in State Primary Schools, we teach Latin through English and English through Latin, teaching English grammar before introducing the same concepts in Latin. Our unique approach therefore directly addresses English literacy and facilites a rich foundation for language learning.

Bringing the past to life to shape the future is a challenge but we know that our students are definitely up to the challenge. This was animated by year 3-6 children who learn Latin to support their knowledge of grammar, their understanding of history and literature and to assist with their language learning in the future.

We want to give our students as many chances as possible to express themselves because we know that this helps them contextualise the texts and concepts we teach.

Here our students are cooking panis quadratus, while learning about food. This is a tasty snack, easy to make and a great way to learn about what the Romans ate when they were out and about.

Virgil's Aeneid is nearly 10,000 lines of Latin dactylic hexameter. It is an epic poem which tells the legendary story of Aeneas, the hero who wandered as a refugee from the Trojan war and made his way to Italy, laying the foundations for what would later become Rome.

How do we teach this to 7-11 year old? First we made a film. All of the animation in this video was made by year3, 4 and 5 pupils studying Latin in London primary schools as part of their work with us at the Latin Programme. We still use this film to teach our pupils and know that our pupils love using their creativity to help them learn.

Our students learn Latin by using their creativity and imaginations.

This is a clip of a flim we made with 300 young stars, telling the story of the Aeneid. Here Aeneas and the queen (regina) Dido of Carthage meet and he begins to forget his duty (pietas).

We are constantly impressed at how our 7,8, 9 and 10 year old pupils understand and comment on complex language, literary themes and all of the issues arising from their study of the ancient world. For more info go to the link in bio/the comments.
