Welcome to the World Little Two!

It was a bit of a tricky start but after a short stay in hospital we’re all doing well.

I might be a bit quiet while we settle into life as a family of five! But I can’t wait to share my experiences as a blind Mum of two!

Today I visited the Parliament as part of the Disabled Women in Politics event.

The discussion focused on breaking down barriers for disabled women accessing politics and improving representation of disabled women.

To truly represent the UK population there should be over 70 disabled women MPs, currently there are 8.

(I did also quite enjoy that the event organiser Tanni Grey Thompson did have to double check the procedure if I went into labour in Parliament 🤣)

I can now swim 25 metres in a minute! 🏊🏻 👩🏼‍🦯

Oh and I’m 8 months pregnant.

I started regularly exercising at the gym and pool back in January. It’s been a wonderful experience finally finding a welcoming space for me to exercise as a disabled person and especially through my second pregnancy.

It also makes me sad that I’ve faced so many barriers previous to finding the right exercise. As a result of negative discrimination at school and other places I associated sport with shame and exclusion.

Now I am celebrating my disabled body, the life it is growing & my new love of fitness!

Disabled people have a right to travel independently and safely.

You have a legal right to “turn up and go”. You don’t have to book!

Failed assistance puts our safety at risk. If you have booked and assistance doesn’t turn up you are entitled to compensation.

I visited Nottingham today & absolutely loved the tram!

It was accessible, spacious and a lovely member of staff helped explain the route we needed.

I wish more UK cities had trams!

I’ve just had a much needed relaxing break at 🧖‍♀️🦮

We’ve stayed before & I enjoy visiting as staff are so welcoming to my Guide Dog Ava.

A few ways staff made me feel welcome as a blind guest:
Staff guided me to the changing room.
My drink was placed in front of me where I could find it on a table.
Ava was welcomed in the spa lounge (she didn’t go in the pool area!)
We got an early check in so that Ava could relax in the room.
The therapist told me when where & how she would touch my body during a massage.

None of these are radical changes or big asks but just lots of little moments of inclusion.

That’s how you get a loyal disabled customer who feels valued & welcomed.

Today I stand in solidarity with friends in the disabled community & oppose assisted dying.

International examples have shown that these laws create pressure for disabled people to end their lives. The Bill does not address these risks of coercion or social pressure.

Many Happy Returns to my best friend, partner & co-parent.

Known to my social media followers as my “Other Half” I really would be incomplete without you.

You’re an incredible father and role model to our Little One. Always sharing the mental load and leading with compassion.

This past year has been full of challenges as we have balanced being parents and managing our busy careers.

We’re always a team and face obstacles together, even if Guide Dog Ava still doesn’t trust you to take me across a road!
