Chess in Schools and Communities Chess in Schools and Communities' aim is to establish a chess club in every primary school in England

Chess in Schools and Communities' aim is to establish a chess club in every primary school in England and Wales. Research has shown that chess can benefit academic performance, encourage better behaviour and classroom engagement, improve self-esteem and of course it's a lot of fun. All schools in the public sector are eligible to join Urban Chess. Once accepted your school will be eligible for som

e or all of the benefits below:

Free weekly chess coaching by one of our professional chess coaches
Free chess sets and chess software
Access to our website and online chess materials
Opportunities to take part in inter-school competitions
An invitation to The London Chess Classic where there will be free coaching and activities and a chance to see the World Chess Champion play. Simultaneous displays by our top players
Coaching material for teaching staff and priority places for them on our courses to become an Accredited CSC Chess Coach. We strongly encourage schools wishing to become part of the scheme to incorporate chess lessons into curriculum time as this produces the best results. Importantly, teaching chess in curriculum time as opposed to during lunchtime or after school makes it much easier to find a coach in your area.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has developed a keen interest in chess over recent years, hosting CSC’s Solidarity Match between UK and Ukraine in 2022, and running several events for children.

On Friday 5 June, the bank played host to a chess tournament for local primary schools. Eight Tower Hamlets schools took part, each sending in a team of six children to the EBRD’s headquarters in Canary Wharf.

The children received lessons from CSC tutors and took part in a simultaneous display against some expert players. They then listened to a presentation about the work of the bank and the careers opportunities it provides which generated plenty of questions from the children, about topics from green energy to AI.

After lunch, it was time for the competition to begin. Everyone took part in a 4-round Swiss tournament which featured some excellent chess, a real demonstration of the skills the players had developed back in school with their CSC tutors this year.

Most importantly, the event was played in a fantastically spirit - competitive, but sporting and supportive.

To finish the day, we presented medals to the highest scorers and some chess goodies to everyone.

The event was the culmination of this year’s Stepney Primary Schools Chess League.

This year has been a huge success for Stepney Park Primary School, who finished top of the league for the very first time as well as picking up the trophy for the highest team score at the EBRD.

Congratulations to everyone who took part!

Our huge thanks to the EBRD for supporting this lovely event and for giving the children such a great insight into the financial world, and especially to Diana and Simone for all their support in arranging the event and hosting us on the day.

The 2026 British Chess Championships are now less than two months away and will this year be hosted by the University of Warwick on the outskirts of Coventry.

As part of the build-up to this great event, CSC partnered with Coventry City Council, Sports Games, and the English Chess Federation to run a series of tournaments aimed at getting more chess played in local schools.

Following on from a successful competition for secondary schools in March, last week we turned our attention to the primary phase, inviting local schools to send in their teams to an event held at the leisure centre AT7.

Such was the demand from primary schools that we split the event into two separate competitions, one held in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

Over the course of the day, 160 pupils from 16 different schools took part, each playing in a five-round Swiss tournament, with medals being awarded for the highest scores and a trophy for the winning teams.

In the morning event, it was St Thomas More that led the way, scoring an incredible 104 points ahead of Coundon (92) and Sidney Stringer (91).

Timmy from St Thomas More had the distinction of achieving the only perfect score of the day, winning all five of his games - congratulations!

The afternoon tournament was a much closer affair, with Stivichall Primary just finishing on top with 84 points, closely followed by Earlsdon (81) and Courthouse Green (80).

Only six points separated the top five teams - every competitor really played their part.

Our thanks to all the players for their excellent chess and for displaying such a competitive but sporting spirit throughout the day.

Thank you too for the teachers, for encouraging their children to take part in what for many was a first chess tournament, and for all their support both on the day and back in school.

What a great way to start a very exciting summer of chess in Coventry.

We are even hopeful that ChessFest will be making its first appearance in the city - watch this space!
