Campaign Against Arms Trade

Campaign Against Arms Trade Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) is a UK-based organisation working to end the international arms trade. https://linktr.ee/caatuk

The arms business has a devastating impact on human rights and security, and damages economic development. Large scale military procurement and arms exports only reinforce a militaristic approach to international problems. CAAT considers that security needs to be seen in much broader terms that are not dominated by military and arms company interests. A wider security policy would have the opportu

nity to reallocate resources according to actual threats and benefits, including addressing major causes of insecurity such as inequality and climate change. CAAT values the diversity of opinion amongst its supporters and is committed to nonviolence in all its work. CAAT, along with Yemeni NGO Mwatana for Human Rights, has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize by the American Friends Service Committee and Quaker Peace and Social Witness.

These are decisions made by the Starmer government in supporting the deadly US-Israeli war on Iran which has killed over 3,400 people.

This does not include the constant and unrestricted intelligence gathering using British bases, such as from RAF Dhekelia.

1 March:
Starmer states the US could use UK military bases for a "specific and limited defensive purpose" - framed as destroying Iranian missiles "at source"

2 March:
RAF flying air patrols shoot down an Iranian drone over Jordan using Eurofighter Typhoon deployed to Qatar in January. Britain has been flying Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35 fighter jets as “air patrols” in support of Gulf monarchies.

3 March:
UK announces it will deploy warship HMS Dragon to Cyprus, with two Wildcat attack helicopters with missiles

4 March:
Starmer announces fighter jets continue with air operations across “Middle East in defence of British interests and allies”

7 March:
The UK Ministry of Defence confirms the US had begun using British bases to launch attacks. 4 U.S. B-1B Lancer bombers land at RAF Fairford to be used against Iran, just as the U.S. announces attacks on Iran are “about to surge dramatically.”

9 March:
Three US B-52 bombers land at RAF Fairford. This is the US Air Force’s largest and heaviest bomber - capable of carrying nuclear weapons and precision-guided munitions.

20 March:
Starmer announces UK bases explicitly available for all U.S. operations. The stipulation they be “defensive” is a lie to save face - launching a B-52 bomber against a civilian population is not defensive.

Declassified reveal that the MoD’s first earth imaging satellite, Tyche, passed over Iran dramatically more times in the lead up to the US-Israeli war on Iran. The satellite can capture at a 90cm resolution within a range of 5km - which means it can gather high levels of military information.

28 March:
RFA Lyme Bay is deployed to Strait of Hormuz. The dock landing ship is armed with two cannons, 10 machine guns, and two further weapons systems.

9 May:
UK government announces HMS Dragon warship will be deployed to Strait of Hormuz.

What is the role of Big Tech in the military-industrial complex? How do companies like Palantir and technologies that we use every day perpetuate wars and genocides? What Tech alternatives exist? How can we fight for our digital independence?

Join CAAT and Open Rights Group for an open meeting to discuss these pressing issues and build solidarity against the militarisation of artificial intelligence!

Now: well done to saying no to US nuclear weapons. Green peer and anti nuclear campaigner Natalie Bennett explains how the US and Russia have let the New START treaty lapse, at the risk of a new arms race and imperilling global safety.
