🌱 Who deserves to be a London Eco Champion?

The London Eco Champion Awards 2026 are now open for nominations - and we’re proud to be supporting their search for the people, schools, businesses and community organisations making a difference across London.

From young Eco Champions taking action at home or in their communities, to schools putting sustainability into practice, local leaders and businesses finding new ways to tackle environmental challenges, there are five categories to enter:

🏆 Mini Warriors (5–11)
🏆 Junior Heroes (12–17)
🏆 Local Leaders (18+)
🏆 Super Schools
🏆 Impact Businesses

Now in their sixth year, the Awards recognise environmental action in all its forms, whether it’s a small project making a big difference locally or a completely new approach to a sustainability challenge.

And you don’t have to nominate someone else. Self-nominations are welcome, too.

Nominations are free and open until 25 October 2026, with winners celebrated at the Awards ceremony at King’s Place on 9 December.

“I never thought climate change was something I could influence as an athlete. But if you have influence, you have to be able to use your voice.” - Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

The Athlete Voices & the Power of Influence panel at The Future of Sustainable Sport Summit featured:

Climate change can feel overwhelming and abstract. Talking about a basketball court becoming too hot to play on, or the importance of protecting the waterways you have spent your life around, gives people something tangible to connect with.

🟢 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞.
You don't need millions of followers. Whether you're an athlete, a business owner, a creator or simply someone with a social media account, you have the ability to introduce ideas, share useful information and amplify people doing important work.

One post probably won't change someone's mind. But repeatedly using your platform to talk about something you genuinely care about can help shift what people see, think and ultimately act on.

The conversation was a reminder that influence isn't just about how many people follow you. It's about what you choose to do with the attention you already have.

What happens when millions of passionate fans turn their collective power towards climate action?

At Earthfest 2026, Hyekyeong Kim, Founder of KPOP4PLANETS, joined Lewis Jamieson, CEO & Founder of Music Declares Emergency, to explore exactly that.

Hyekyeong shared how KPOP4PLANET has mobilised K-pop fan communities around the environmental impacts of the music industry - including campaigns encouraging fans to return unwanted CDs to record labels and merchandise companies.

It was a powerful reminder that climate action doesn't always start with institutions or governments. It can start with communities, culture and the things people already care deeply about.

KPOP4PLANET is showing what happens when fandom becomes collective action - engaging young people, challenging corporations and turning passion into meaningful pressure for change.

A hugely inspiring session and a brilliant example of the power people have when they come together. Thank you Hyekeyong & Lewis for your fantastic insights. 💚

👚 What if the outfit you don’t wear anymore could become someone else’s favourite?

At Earthfest: Community Day, our Swap Shop gave people the chance to pass on clothes they no longer wanted, find something new-to-them, and keep garments in use for longer. We ended up with a fantastic collection of clothes, so thank you so much to everyone who brought something along.

But you don’t need to wait for the next Earthfest event to make a difference.

♻️ Got clothes you never wear? Give them to a friend, charity shop or clothing exchange rather than letting them sit at the back of your wardrobe.

🛍️ Need something new? Try secondhand first – from charity shops and vintage stores to online resale platforms.

👯 Or make it a social event by organising a swap with your friends, family, workplace or local community. Everyone brings things they no longer wear, and everyone gets the chance to find something they love.

Clothes swapping is an easy and fun way to make an impact.

What does it take to turn material innovation into real change?

At the Material Innovation in Fashion: From Lab to Market panel at the Future of Sustainable Fashion summit, one message came through clearly: creating a new material is only the first step. And it's already happening.

The challenge is getting innovative materials into mainstream fashion, which means:

🧵 Brands committing to buying and using them at scale
💡 Designing solutions that work commercially, not just technically
🏭 Building the infrastructure needed to increase production
🤝 Bringing innovators, brands and investors together

The innovation is here. Now we need to help it scale. 📈

♻️ Genia Mineeva, Founder of BEEN London, who upcycles materials that would otherwise be discarded into fashion pieces
🧬 Jen Keane, Co-Founder & CEO of Modern Synthesis, who develops new bio-based materials that can replace petrochemical-based materials
🎨 Sophie Vaud, CTO at Colorifix, who uses biology to produce, deposit and fix pigments onto textiles in place of conventional chemical dyeing processes..for such an honest and thought-provoking conversation. It was a brilliant reminder of just how much creativity and ingenuity exists within this industry.

At Earthfest: Community Day, we were delighted to welcome David Shukman and Professor Mark Maslin for a special book signing, giving visitors the chance to meet the experts and take home a little more climate knowledge to add to their bookshelf. 📚

🔥 First up was David Shukman’s The Response: A Story of Fire and Flood in Britain’s New World of Extremes - a gripping look at the climate extremes already happening on our doorstep, from wildfires and floods to record-breaking heat, and what we can do to better prepare for what’s ahead.

🌍 Also available was Mark Maslin’s Climate Change: Essential Guide to Science, Politics and Solutions - an accessible guide to the science behind climate change, the politics shaping our response, and the solutions that could help build a more sustainable future.

And, of course, we were lucky enough to hear from both David and Mark earlier in the day in our Fireside Chat: Searching for Solutions in a World of Extremes, where they shared their expertise and ideas on navigating a rapidly changing world.

🎤 David Shukman is an acclaimed environmental journalist, author and the BBC’s first Science Editor, who spent nearly two decades leading its environmental coverage.

🔬 Professor Mark Maslin is a leading Earth system scientist at UCL, specialising in climate change, its impacts and the solutions we need to tackle it.

Huge thanks to David and Mark for sharing their knowledge, their books and their time with our Earthfest community. We are truly grateful for your time and expertise 💚📖

🎬 On Earthfest: Community Day, we were incredibly lucky to premiere Who If Not Us, a moving new documentary following two young Pakistani climate activists and shining a light on the vital role women and young people play in responding to the climate crisis.

💬 And then we got to hear more behind the film - Director Nyal Mueenuddin joined us for a special Q&A.

It was one of those moments at Community Day that really made you stop, listen and feel - a reminder that climate change isn't just about numbers and headlines, but about people, communities and resilience🌍

A huge thank you to .mueen and the whole Voices from the Roof of the World team for bringing this important story to Earthfest and sharing it with our community. Thank you also to everybody who watched, asked questions and contributed to this urgent conversation.

🌎 At Earthfest: Community Day, our workshops were a true highlight. They gave attendees a chance not just learn something new, but also to connect with the planet and with each other.

🌿 Mindful Movement - helped us slow down, reconnect with nature and ourselves, and explore how mindful movement can help us feel more grounded.

🍵 Herbal Tea Blending - took us on a journey through the wonderful world of herbs, with everyone getting to blend their own herbal tea bags to take home.

♻️ Reusing Plastics - showed us that our soft plastic waste doesn't have to go straight in the bin, as we turned old packaging into colourful, personalised keychains.

🤝 Reimagining Soil - got us thinking about soil in a whole new way, exploring this incredible living material through hands-on activities, creativity and conversation.

A huge thank you to Kerry, Hackney Herbal, Looply Design Studio and Lillie for bringing your brilliant workshops to Earthfest - and to everyone who came along, got stuck in and made them so much fun! 💚
