Alex Nicholson died because of his mixed heritage.
When Alex was diagnosed with blood cancer, he needed a stem cell transplant to survive. Like many patients from mixed heritage backgrounds, finding a matching donor was incredibly difficult because there were so few people with similar genetic characteristics on the stem cell register.
Alex understood this inequality firsthand. He knew that patients from mixed heritage and ethnic minority communities face much lower chances of finding a lifesaving donor match than those from white Northern European backgrounds.
Before he died, Alex wanted to help change those odds.
That is why Alex's Legacy exists today: to increase awareness, recruit more stem cell donors from underrepresented communities, and help build a more diverse register where every patient has an equal chance of finding their match.
No one should lose their life because the right donor cannot be found.
If you are from a mixed heritage or ethnic minority background, your registration could be the lifesaving match someone is desperately waiting for.
