Bridging Africa’s Energy Gap to Drive Industrialization

The Africa Economic Forum (AEF) has made a pivotal case for the establishment of Armed Forces College of Medicine in Abuja and Lagos.

The Chief Engagement Officer of AEF, Dr Hope Uweja made the call for this institution at the second day of the public hearing hosted by the House of Representatives Committee on Armed Forces.

Dr Uweja noted that the establishment of facilities to cater for unique medical conditions of military personnel within the context of their combat experience was long overdue.

Citing examples of developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and India, Dr Uweja noted that military hospitals are a backbone for combat readiness and deployability of active duty personnel, adding that they deliver such unique services as trauma care and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Dr Uweja further stated that the military medical centres will drive advance medical research while supporting civilian population during public health emergencies.

As part of its method of operation, the Armed Forces College of Medicine is to linked to the proposed Veterans' Health Sciences Centres for the purpose of mainstreaming clinical experience and training.

In a related development, an AEF delegation led by its Chief Engagement Officer, Dr Hope Uweja paid a courtesy visit on the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Armed Forces, Hon Babajimi Benson.

During the visit, Dr Uweja presented an outlined of the Senior Life Initiative for Veterans consistent with the spirit of the proposed Veterans Federation bill.

Dr Uweja emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Armed Forces while proposing a training programme for members of the Armed Forces committee, to give a broader perspective on the AEF proposals.

In his response, Hon Benson expressed the willingness of his committee give consideration to the items in the proposal presented by the AEF.
